The only way to tell if its a video card problem is to swap it out with a video card that works and see if it works..if it does then its your video card, if it does not then its something else..but first try these two things and let me know what happens..first toggle the FN with F5/F6/F7. Sometimes it gets changed to video projector and the monitor does not come on..if nothing, then reboot and hit F8 that is Safe Mode. Choose Safe Mode with VGA, using your onboard video. If you can get a picture then go to Device Manager find the video card in the list and right click on the '+", then right click on the video card and update driver..see if one of the last two work before testing with a different video card. Let me know...pls rate this solution with 4 diamonds..

Laptop to TV Connection

Check if you are sending the signal to the external monitor. On my laptop with Windows 7, I can right click on an open section of the desktop and choose Graphics Properties. In this window, I can choose to send the display to the laptop's internal monitor, the external monitor or both.
Pressing Crtl-Alt-F1 will force the video onto the external monitor on the fly (Crtl-Alt-F3 goes back to the laptop's screen).

When I have added a second monitor to a desktop, I needed to reboot and allow new hardware to be found before the related Screen Resolution (right click on the desktop again) let me find the second monitor and choose if this was a duplicate or extended screen.

I hope this helps.

Hi, i have a problem with my Dell Inspirion 6400, after replacing Motherboard laptop won't boot up, after pressing power button, all 3 lights comes up (caps, num and scrl lock) and than back off, power...

I would hook up an external monitor to see if the laptop is working. If it is working fine then you must have a connection problem where the LCD plugs into the motherboard. I am willing to bet it is the LCD cable mot seated correctly. If it does not work on an external monitor try switching the memory chips one at a time if you have 2. Everything you mention indicates it is booting but no video. Good Luck Phil

Replaced LCD Inverter, now screen comes on and bright but choppy

Does the external monitor display a normal image?
If the images is OK then the video card is OK.
The inverter supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp which provides the backlighing and does not jumble the colors on the screen. If you get a pinkish hue or a flashing screen then this would indicate
the CCFL lamp is faulty.
From the description of the fault, it indicates that the fault could be a faulty video cable or video connector. Try reseating the video cable/connector on the motherboard.

Monitor does not work, computer starts up, dell prompts load, windows prompts load then screen goes black. i can hear everything loading but no display.

connect an external monitor on your machine and check if display is ok on the external monitor. if yes, try to re-install your video driver and check if display is ok on your laptop.

if both doesnt have display (external monitor and laptop's display) i suspected your lcd display is faulty.

Dell inspiron 6400 start up problem.

Can you hear the hard drive spinning and the computer appears to be running but you you get a blank screen. If you look at the LCD screen at an acute angle and you see a dim image. then you have a backlight problem. To determine if you have a video card problem or a lcd screen problem, Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first and then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Get back to me with the results of these tests and any error messages etc. so I can advise you.

DELL inspiron 6400 laptop screen turned black

this sounds like a classic case of inverter problems, it could be just inverter coil thats gone which is an inexpensive repair, if it is the inverter then its a bit more.
try the Fn the F key that shows two tv screen icons, it may just have switched to external mode by accident

good luck
