Have you installed the Windows OS on the new HDD? Insert the new Windows OS in the DVD rom drive, shut down, Unplug, remove battery, plug in, at boot the new OS DVD should start and ask Press any key to boot from CD/DVD, tap key.

SOURCE: No boot sector

The other post is correct, but you don't want to try and take out Hard Drives from laptops.
The easiest option is to use a Dell XP CD for recovery
There is a little known fact though, there is a factory shipped Dell Partition that is hidden for recovery.
There is a tool (slightly technical) to 'properly' deal with repairing the MBR (as regular XP disks can ruin Dell MBR's)

Dsrfix Quick-Start This section should give you a quick idea how Dsrfix is used. However, be sure to also read the following sections to get a clearer idea of the details and potential pitfalls.
Dsrfix is a DOS program. It does not work in Windows. It does not work in a XP command-prompt window. It does not work in the Windows PE (preinstallation environment) or RE (recovery environment) -- those are not DOS. You need to boot to real DOS. If you need to, CLICK HERE FOR HOW , you can just download the 98SE DOS Bootdisk to a floppy.
This will get you into DOS (if you need that help) and then you can follow directions below)
It's a bit overwhelming, but it's the safe and real way

Download dsrfix.zip from DSRFIX LINK (Updated 09-20-2007, version 3.11)

  • Extract dsrfix.com from the archive.
(Note to reader: The other files in the archive are supplemental. The only file you need to copy to floppy disk is dsrfix.com.)
  • Boot from your DOS boot disk.
  • Run the command " DSRFIX ". Review the results to assess whether your system is a good candidate for restoring Dell's DSR feature.
  • Optional: save a dumpfile before making any changes. This may be useful if you later need the information for forensic reconstruction.
  • If you decide your system is a good candidate for repairing Dell's DSR feature, rerun Dsrfix with the command " DSRFIX /F ". The program will repeat its summary report, then prompt you to queue any changes to be made. Accept or deny each fix proposed by Dsrfix. After proposals have been queued, confirm whether you want Dsrfix to go ahead and write those changes to your hard disk.
  • Rerun Dsrfix again for a new report to check the results.
If Dsrfix's report shows no fatal errors and no alerts, the Dell-specific restore feature should be functional on your system. You should see a blue "www.dell.com" banner across the top of the screen when the computer starts to boot. Pressing the Ctrl+F11 keys at that moment should divert the boot process to Dell's custom restore utility.

Hope that helps,

TrustMe

SOURCE: i have Dell inspiron 1525

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck

No boot sector on internal hard drive

If the drive has not crashed ( Not Useable ). You may be able to connect the Hard Disk to another machine and get the data off.
You will need to install to a computer as a secondary drive. USB to Harddisk Adapter.

When you boot up the laptop press F10 to bring up an list of devices to boot up from, select the CD drive.
OR
Go into the BIOS setup and to the Boot start up and move the CD to the top as the first boot device with the hard disk as the second device.

Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop (windows/xp sp3) No boot sector on internal hard drive

Hi There,

Probably the easiest way to repair/replace the boot sector is using an XP install Disk. You need to insert the disk, restart the computer, and begin pressing the F12 Key during Bootup. You should be given a Boot Menu. Select your CD/DVD drive as the drive to boot from. Let windows XP do its setup and you will halt at a screen that gives you a chance to Press R for repair. Press R. You will be in DOS mode with a cursor blinking. Type FIXBOOT and press the enter key. Follow the propmpts.

If this does not fix your boot sector, go through the same whole process again but at the cursor type in FIXMBR and hit the entr key. This is to repair the Master Boot Record.

If neither of these tools get you booted back into Windows, then you could have any one of a number of other issues, It would be difficult to address them all in this forum.

I don't wish to be a doomsayer, but an Inspiron 6000 could easily be 5 years old, the same as the expected normal life of a hard drive.

Best of Luck.

INSPIRON 6000 on start up says no boot sector on internal hard drive.

Mickey it sounds like, the system files are corrupted on the hard drive. If you have the disks, I think they are the operating system and the drivers and utilities cd. You would install the operating system cd first and then when that is all done then go ahead and install the drivers and utilities.

If you can't get the operating system to install then the hard drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

Code error 0146 and 0148

Both of these are hard drive errors. Error 0146 is a failed hard drive or bad drive sector, and 0148 is that thew machine is no longer detecting the hard drive. Basically, your hard drive has failed and will need replaced. Replace the hard drive and you will be set. The best place I've found to buy hard drives is at pricewatch.com, they have the best prices on the market.
