If it turns black again, try to check first if it's just the LED's that are defective. If you push the monitor 40 degrees down, and you can see very faint display from that angle, then it's probably that the LED's are the culprit, and you can have it replaced for a less price.

If the drive has not crashed ( Not Useable ). You may be able to connect the Hard Disk to another machine and get the data off.
You will need to install to a computer as a secondary drive. USB to Harddisk Adapter.

yes, get a volt meter and carefully place the leads on the output side of the charger....see if it's delivering the 8.5 to 12 volts needed....per the "voltage label specification" of your charger.

I would go to Dell.com, navigate to the drivers for your laptop and download the latest driver for your WiFi card. To install the driver, click on the file.

That usually means that you're battery has exceeded it's life expectancy and needs to be replaced. Could also mean that the circuit on your system board that charges your battery is defective and not charging your battery. Remove the battery and use the AC adapter and see if the the laptop turns on with out the Yellow LED flashing.
If so, then you either need a new battery or new system board. If the latter, might be chwaper to buy new computer.

James,
You will need to either reinstall Windows or you can search the internet for password recovery software. There is usually a fee on some of these sites. Dell does not have any generic passwords to help you get back into Windows.
Thank You,

DST (Drive Self Test) failed. this simply means that the drive is no longer stable. If you are unable to boot to windows or safe mode and this is the error you get you might need to do a low level format if you still want to use it or do a debug script then repartition and re-format the drive.

The Low-level partition - will reinitialize your drive to the factory settings.

Debug Script - removes DOS and non-DOS partitions on the hard drive. It also allows you to convert a drive from an incompatible partition structure to one that will work with FDISK.EXE such as, converting Linux partitions to MS-DOS partitions.

For you to use the Low-level format and to completely wipe out HDD data. Use the format software from http://www.killdisk.com, download the CD ISO image , burn to CD, ad boot from CD , the rest can be found in the menu.

In using the debug script use this :
Insert the boot diskette that contains the Debug command into the respective drive.
Restart the computer.
A black screen with Microsoft Windows® 95 Startup Menu will appear. Press the <5> key on the keyboard followed by the <Enter> key. The boot process will conclude with an A:\> prompt, followed by a blinking underline (cursor).
From the A:\> prompt, type the following commands and press the <Enter> key after each command:
NOTICE: Performing the following will remove all data from your hard disk drive.

NOTE: Type the bolded text only (the debug prompt is a dash). You will receive an error if you type anything other than the bold text. The non-bolded text represents the system response that will appear after typing each command and press the <Enter> key.

debug
-F 200 L1000 0
-A CS:100
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80

NOTE: Type 80 for the Main hard drive - HD 0, or type 81 for the Second hard drive - HD 1.

xxxx:010C INT 13
xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110 (Leave this line blank and press the <Enter> key)
-G

The message, Program terminated normally, appears. Turn off the computer by pressing the power button.
On the next startup the hard drive must be partitioned and formatted.

Hope this helps to save your drive.

If it's the drivers for the laptop, you can find them at Dell's support site. If it's the drivers for the monitor (some monitors need their own drivers in order to work) you can find them at the monitor manufacturer's site or driverguide.com

Safe Mode is only for troubleshooting and internet may not work, because Windows loads with minimal drivers. Hence hardware will fail to load.

There is a Same Mode with Networking option.

You can remove or change the Window's User or administrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access to download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot up the laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CD which contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removal program. Click on one of these links to download HIREN'S BOOTCD :- http://www.hirensbootcd.net/ http://67.20.82.163/

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen
