It won't scan to anything or fax, saying to "Check Connection". What to do?
SOURCE: Not able to send fax to an eFax number
I've had the same problem before. I don't know if it will solve your problem directly but I can offer a work around or two.
1. I have an efax number but with a company called callwave.com , I fax stuff to other customers using callwave and my MFC 7820n completes each fax successfully. So if you can get yourself a callwave efax number you can fax to yourself and forward fax as an email to your intended party.
2. Or, you can use your mfc 7820n to scan your fax docs as a pdf directly to your computer and then emailing them to your intended party.
Unfortunately it might be a brother issue because at the office when I use the hp fax machine instead of the brother machine, the hp faxes to efax numbers without a problem.

I'm pretty sure that the problem (though the machine indicating otherwise) is that gmail requires SSL, and the Scan to Email (server) doesn't support SSL. If this is the problem, you can easily check it out by trying to use some other mail, with another SMTP server, which doesn't require SSL.

I have had this problem with multiple different Brother products and this has worked for me every time providing your network is up and running.
Reason behind problem: Brother uses a Network Name for the device for access to the printer by the TCP/IP Port, occasionally your dns cache will hold the incorrect IP address for the printer and you need to force the network name to point at the correct IP.
**Note the steps to find your printer IP may change depending on the model of your printer but you can find out where it is in your manual if this doesn't work.
1. On your printer press the menu button.
2. Naviagate to LAN -> TCP/IP -> IP Address
3. When you press ok on IP Address it should show the printers current IP at the top of the page. It will look something like 192.168.0.164 keep a note of this.
4. Back on your computer go to Control Panel
5. Open printers (this may vary slightly by operating system)
6. Find your Brother MFC and right click on it. Then press Properties.
7. Click on the Ports Tab.
8. Select the port that has a tick next to it and press Configure Port...
9. Note down the Port Name: It will be something like BRN_984B5C
10. You can now close all of the printer windows.
11. Open File Explorer
12. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
13. There will be a file called hosts (no extention) double click on it and choose Notepad to open the file.
14. At the bottom of this document after all the other text you will need to type in the following (using the information we have found):
192.168.0.164 BRN_984B5C
15. Close and save the file. As you are in Vista you may have some funky UAC windows asking if you are sure you want to save etc. etc. just say yes.
That should do it, your printer will now be able to scan, print & fax from the printer and the printer will be able to find you if you do the same from it's menu.
Hope this helps.

Go to system/computer control panel, select "scanners and cameras". you should see your brother system in there (if u were able to print to it but not scan). Right click on it, select properties, and select "Network Properties" Tab. Choose select "specify your machine by address" rather by "by name". Most home/home office users dont have a local domain server at home, so even though your printer was named, it cannot be located by tcp-ip using the name, but rather by ipaddress. This solves the issue.

Hello,
We need to first check the driver to make sure it is installed and working correctly. Please go to “start menuè control panelè scanners and cameras”.
(Note: For Vista users, you must select “classic view” in control panel to be able to see “scanners and cameras”)
You should now see all scanners currently installed.
If you do see your brother scanner, please right click the icon and select “properties”; here you can select “test scanner”.
If the test fails, select the “network settings” tab. Here you can have the driver set to locate the device by name or by IP address, please select IP address and make sure the IP address matches that of your brother machine.
To get the IP address on your brother, print out the network settings page; either with the “report” button on the printer or go “menuè print reports”
If the scanner does not appear in the list at all, you will need to reinstall the software. You can download the software using the below link.
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/Public/CountryTop.aspx?reg=us&c=ca&lang=en
If your scanner successfully completed the diagnostic test, we can move on to try using control center to scan.
To access Control Center, please go to “Start menuè All programsè brotherèControl Center”.
In Control center, please make sure the correct device is being selected in the ”model” drop down list.
Thanks,
Pat
Solved! I now can scan wirelessly throughout my network. I downloaded the drivers for a friends newer HP all-in-one scanner and I can scan. Look for the driver for the 309a series of printers and install it. Complete the install and set up your existing printer. You can now scan, print, fax wirelessly. It includes updated HP apps for these functions that work with OS 10.5. I didn't upgrade to the HP 1.1 drivers through Apple. The file name is: PS_AIO_05_C309a_Net_Full_Mac_WW_102.dmg
