When I turn the camera on, only a partial screen is coming up. The top half of the words "Cyber-shot" is showing. The camera makes a turn-on sound (dings). The "Menu" button does nothing. The buttons in the "control" area make a bleep when pushing them, but nothing happens. Turning the top that controls the picture settings including "looking at last picture" and "video" does not do anything. When I hit the power switch to turn it off, the "on light" goes off, but the camera does not turn off. I have to open the battery compartment to shut it off. The batteries have been removed and charged. The memory stick has been taken out (and put back in) and does not make a different. The camera has not been dropped or abused. One day when I turned it on, the above were the results. Any advice would be appreciated. I tried the seven steps that someone suggested, to no avail. When I turn the camera on, only a partial screen is coming up. The top half of the words "Cyber-shot" is showing. According to Sony, storing the camera lens-down in a warm area for an
extended period (a week) can help re-lubricate the retractor drive in
cases like this.
This camera seems to have a predisposition to
lens retraction problems. Try some gentle nudging, Even a small piece
of debris can jam the mechanism, so it might just need a little push or
pull.
Hi, Siegmar! No, it's not a battery problem. It's focus system problem - sounds like it stucks from time to time, could be some sand / dirt / dust inside it, focus is sensitive to things like that. It should be cleaned by a professional. I work in a Sony service center.
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
Assuimn there is nothing on the lens[I would not think this is the case as it would not show as a distict spot
Not ne fora DIY or a repairshop this is a a failure of the CCD.
Depending on the age of the camera and model this may qualify for replacement, as there was a reported CCD issue at one time
Either that or Sony may offer a replacement at a good discount.
Hello Woodyallen,
in order to repair your precious camera you should replace the Lens Block Assy, part number A1105719A. Please contact your nearest Sony Service.
Best regards,
Arpad
