You need a new DLP chip. The chip has little mirrors that are black on one side and white on the other side. When the chip wears out , your screen will turn white one dot at a time or black one dot at a time or they may just all stick shut at once. Since your screen is black, all your mirrors are closed. You can buy the chip from shopjimmy.com and they have a video of how to replace the chip so you can do it yourself. It takes about 1 1/2 hours. The chip is about $160. To have this service done for you is about $200. Do it yourself and save the money. Your tv will be just like new again. Just make sure the chip is in perfectly level or when you turn your tv back on, your picture will be slanted. you won't notice it on the picture itself but words on the screen or scrolling messages and the menu will be slanted.
If a Hitachi rear projection it may be an adjustment inside the set--If you comment here with the model number and it is what I suspect--I will tell you a easy way to try to correct this.
As a first step go to black and white program or turn color all the way off and stand back and examine the screen/picture= if not black and white and mostly RED this is a common issue on their projection sets.

the easiest way is to turn the color all the way down to zero. Then notice the overall color of the screen, if it doesnt appear as a good black and white picture you will have to adjust the screens. To do that you have to remove the speaker grill cover and the small access panel, then depending on the chassis you will see a small square with 6 dials on it 3 on top and 3 on the bottom it will have screen stamped on it. adjust those 3 untill your screen appears the best black and white picture as possible. Now if your chassis only has 3 dials on the sgaure control box those are focusdont adjust them. . then the 3 CRT boards will have the dials you need adjust those for the best black and white picture. when your satisfied that you have a good black and white picture. then turn your color back up and adjust the tint.Let me know if you need more assistance.
use the advanced options page and reset the factor blue and red convergence defaults then do re apply the auto color defaults color at first it seemed very red (which is good because red was the missing factor in the green picture) but after reseting all the color and tints to the normal ranges I then reset the color auto correct again and all seems fine.
You can turn up the Screen controls in back of set. Look for the focus block that has 6 controls on it. 3 are for the screen and 3 for the focus, in each color Red, Blue, Green. need to turn evenly to keep color balanced. On set turn color all the way down and then get a good black and white picture.
