Laptop dvd rom drive wont read dvds... will read cd's, please help. I've uninstalled the device from device manager only to have the same driver load up and install fine(maybe). I've recently did a complete format and reinstall hoping that would fix my drive, however i have the same problem. the drive will read a cd fine but a dvd wont play or show up.
It sounds like the drive itself is faulty. Since you've reformatted, it obviously isn't a software problem. CDs and DVDs are read by two different lasers so its not uncommon for one disc not to be read yet the other is just fine which seems to be the case. A new one can be purchased for under $40. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010100005+1036508690&name=Slim+Combo+Drive
