If you use a set top box tuner the TV will become the monitor and the box will become the tuner and use one of the rear or side video inputs and bypass the internal tuner and just programme the stb remote to set the TV volume to the desired level
The above link may have the remote you want but as I am in the UK the server blocks me

Hi, With new DTV's these days, there will be problem running old players.(VCR) Video cassette recorders will not be able to record Digital signal. You will have to get (PVR) personal video recorder which can record and play Digital programs with great picture.

It is possible to record a channel and watch a second channel. If your cable vision has digital-only signals, you will need a Digital tuner or a second cable box.
If your cable has conventional channels still, you can buy a splitter and run the cablevision to the TV and the CableBox at the same time.
Switch to the TV tuner, you see cable.
Switch to the recorder (connected to the CableBox) and you see what you can record.

If it's like the DR620 it will only receive analogue from the TV aerial. I connect the AV out connections on my set box to the inlet AV on the recorder and watch and record through the recorder's "rear AV input" selection.

Loss of sound is often a SCART connection problem. Check that the SCARTS are pushed in securely. Or if the SCART is old, it may be faulty. Try a newer one, or one that you know is definitely ok.
