I have also attached an image of both ends of a SATA data cable (right angled at one end, straight and all types available) . SATA cables are standard, there isn't a special one for any particular device or motherboard.

SOURCE: where are the SATA ports on the hp compaq dc5000

Hello,

To the best of my knowledge and working with HP/Compaq for over 8 years, this model does not have SATA ports on the motherboard unless someone has customized your system with a new board other than that which came as the original board.

I would like to fit a second hard drive i have a sata cable to go from mother board to second hard drive which i understand plugs into the mother board socket below main hard drive but their does not...

Look for more power connectors on the cables already powering devices. Especially check the entire length of the power cable terminating at your main hard drive. It is ok to use multiple connectors on the same cable simultaneously.
If you do need a splitter, I recommend this one.

After replacing my psu (was old and it shorted out) my LG CD-ROM GCR-8523B doesn't work. It has power but the computer doesn't recognize it..?

It is possible that when psu shorted it shorted part of the mother board. Try going into device manager right on the cd-rom in the list and choose search for new hard ware in the drop down menu. If this doesn't work go back into device manager right click the cd-rom and uninstall the cd-rom and reboot the pc. If it does not auto find the cd-rom that way, the mother board is probably messed up. Oh yeah try unplugging the ribbon cable for the cd-rom from the mother board and plug it back in also.

Please rate, and write testimonial if you feel the need to, if this was helpful.

I need to know where to connect the sata cables for the cd rom to the mother board

Sata cables on both ends have female connectors. Just find a "L" shaped connector on the back of your cd rom and to the motherboard( usually about the size of a usb connector but narrower a little bit, sometimes color blue or black depending on the brand of your motherboard with a lable on it like "sata 1" or "sata2" ) and connect the cables on each end. Ther's only one connector at the back of the cd rom but on the motherboard, you can choose any sata connector available.

You can connect any one of the ports. and you need to go to bios and enable the sata ports if its not done already..

If you have a normal CD Drive you can connect with IDE cable.
