Will not start unless top cover is off

I have a reddy model r55 and it will only start at times if you take the top cover off then when it fires up you can put the cover back on and it will be fine. Any suggestions?

Check that the fan is clean and unobstructed. It sounds like something may be cutting down the air flow. Or the cad eye may be faulty or dirty.
Hope this helps.

Reddy Heater R55 55,000 BTU heater spits and sputters but CONTINUES TO RUN. Air pressure is at 3.4 (was 4.0). new lines, Plug is firing well, fuel is old but clean. My question is: is there supposed to be...

If you brought the heater to my shop with the great (no lie!) description of the problem we would immediately grab a flashlight, shine into the tank and look for water droplets rolling on the bottom of the than. (Keep in mind that a layer of water can be on bottom & not show up with the light)

The next thing would be to use soapy water and try to find a crack in or around the plastic cover and move all the way to the nozzle looking for an air leak. 3.4 at the gauge doesn't mean the air is going all the way to the nozzle.

Next, remove the top cover. Does the heater run fine once removed? If so, replace the worn out nozzle. That heater has some age on it and DESA recommended annual replacement.

The filter is more of a strainer than a filter. It is hollow.

R155A Reddy Heater Help!

This is going to be a tough one. You have been thorough, done it right, and it damn sure ought to fire off every time!

There is something that is causing you a problem and don't think that because you put in new parts that you didn't get a bad part. It happens. Not often, but it does happen. I have rec'd nozzles from the factory that had the orifice installed sideways, so, I know it happens.

If the ignitor glows- (it only stays on for 5 seconds, then quits)
If the fuel fogs (not sprays)
If the fuel hits the glowing ignitor
Then it should fire off-- every time.

Now, if the photocell doesn't like what it sees, then the photocell will shut the heater down within 5 seconds, but it at least should have ignited. Right? Unless the photocell or the board are bad. Maybe.

Lift the top, and watch. What's happening. Are you having a fuel problem or an electronics problem? For instance- is the ignitor glowing every time at start up or only sometimes.

Let me know what you find.

Reddy Heater R55 concerns

They are grounds, and should have two screws on the burner tray to hold it from moving. On my heater this is where the grounds get attached. It gives the igniter a dedicated direct ground.

Replacing rotor on Readdy Heater

Remove top shell. Remove cover. Remove filters. Remove filter base. Then it should pull out. Check clearance on new rotor .003/.004 checked with feeler gage. Reinstall in reverse order. Reset air pressure. Good luck.
