This should be just as simple as inserting the DVD. A menu should pop up prompting you with the buttons of a DVD player. This of course is only if you computer has the appropriate software and drive for this to occur. If it is set up for this and it is not playing it could be that you are putting in a BluRay and not a regular DVD. Not all can play both.

Do you have Power DVD on you laptop or any DVD software to enable you play DVD plate? If no, then Install Power DVD software. After the installation, then try to play it again with the Power DVD software. You can download Power DVD from freeware site http://www.4shared.com/get/OLyshBOX/POWER_DVD_40_Full_Retail.html Good luck

I have compaq presario CQ60 laptop.my dvd writer is to play only CD but not DVD.
to play dvd, a software is necessary. examples are power player. Xync, VLC are a few commonly available players that may play a DVD format, Real is also a good choice.
download any freeware to play DVD. Rest is okay.

Don't play what? Games? Movies? If you mean movies, you can try Artisan DVD player. This will only play DVD movies if your laptop has a DVD-rom. If you only have a cd-rom, no software will help you play a DVD movie. You can get the software free here:

Two things to check: First, look on the tray edge - does it say DVD and CD, or just CD? If it does not say DVD,it will not play them. The second thing is you may not have software to play a DVD. Usually Windows will use media player, assuming you have a dvd player. You can also open "my computer" and the drive will show up as a DVD or just CD.

No dvd installed
If it's a DVD movie that you cannot play then you need a special program like powerdvd to run it.
