No dvd installed

You can install or reinstall DVD driver onto your laptop.
1. Open Device Manager using devmgmt.msc command and enable "View -> Show hidden devices" option. Now locate the DVD/CD-ROM drives and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers items.
2. Right-click on each entry present under both "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" sections one bye one and select Uninstall.
3. Once all have been removed, right-click again and select Scan for hardware changes.
The drives will be rediscovered and when the drivers are loaded back, the drives will re-appear in My Computer window.
You can also try to restart your computer.
Then you should also have a DVD player program on your laptop. You can try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play both Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Do you have Power DVD on you laptop or any DVD software to enable you play DVD plate? If no, then Install Power DVD software. After the installation, then try to play it again with the Power DVD software. Don't play what? Games? Movies? If you mean movies, you can try Artisan DVD player. This will only play DVD movies if your laptop has a DVD-rom. If you only have a cd-rom, no software will help you play a DVD movie. You can get the software free here:

If your laptop is equiped with a DVD ROM, then insert a DVD and play it using a compatible media player.
Ex. DVD Player

Try to upgrade your media player or install third party player available on the net which can play dvd.

Try installing a DVD rom. The sony unit installed in your laptop is a cd rom/burner. Cd roms will not play DVDs.

You need a program like WinDVD to play DVD movies. You can download a trial version here.
