WD My Book Essential 320 GB & Windows ME compatability?

I received this one for Christmas [ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XRM... ] but I have Windows ME operating system on my computer. Does anyone know if perhaps it is possible to get this to work on ME by downloading drivers and such? I emailed Western Digital but I wanted to check here as answers will probably come quicker.

The plug and play came up and said it could not find the driver, so I went to Settings > Control Panel > Add Hardware and found "Unknown Device" on the list and picked it. I enabled it and restarted the computer. It still didn't work. So I repeated the Add Hardware and found it on the list, this time it was enabled but it said ... "Device is already installed, but it has a problem. Device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed (Code 10)."

It searched for a driver and used the default Windows USB one (C:\WINDOWS\INF\USB.INF) but it didn't work. Has anyone successfully used this model on Windows ME and if so, please help :(

I had such an issue but really don't remember how I solved it. But I know that is a problem with Plug&Play enumerator. I recommend you to try it with Linux Live CD. I fixed code 10 error with a sound card by booting from Mandriva One 2007 Live cd. The sound started to work in Mandriva and after closing it in Xp as well.

WHAT IS THE INPUT VOLTAGE AND AMPS OF A 500 GB WD EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. I LOST MY ADAPTER

You can normally buy a replacement adapter from Western Digital from this link, but they are out of stock at the moment.

As an alternative place to purchase this, it looks like you can buy it on Amazon.com

The wd is not being recognised on my laptop. It does not show up

Did the WD Hard drive come with a software driver installation package? What operating system are you using? If Windows, please check Windows "Device Manager" and verify if there are question marks next to the device when inserted into USB port. I would also recommend upgrading the firmware on this model:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/Step1.asp?id=wdfMP_Essential&os=win

Have you verified that other USB-compatible devices work in the USB port that you are using? Have you tried inserting this device into another USB port? If you are using multiple USB ports for multiple devices, try removing all USB-compatible devices and then re-insert WD hard drive on its own.

Please email me your results at [email protected]. Thanks!

HOW TO CHANGE 320GB SATA HDD TO 500GB SATA

Yes. The case doesn't care what size the drive is. The computer is just asking for the USB driver for the case. Check the WD site for the driver for the model of MyBook that you have. That should cover it.

WD Western Digital mybook premium edition

Google is your friend... I found the WD website and browsed for the model you said. I found the installation guide and looked it over. You might want to do the same. You can also contact the company via the website to either download the software or order it from them Product page: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/extmatrix.asp Guide: http://www.wdc.com/en/library/dual-option/2079-001072.pdf
