if the band needs adjusting then it would be doing it before the oil change
possible that while you were doing something, the vacuum line or the vacuum actuator was damaged or wires to the 3rd ratio servo/ solenoid were damaged
run the fault codes to find out the fault area
have a pressure test done on the gear box to determine if the fault is mechanical. Have the bands and clutch packs adjusted . RTUN fault codes to check TCM problems.
Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.
Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands
Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.
foward and no reverse.In order for the reverse to happen there is a transmission brake assemble,the transmission band holds the brake assembly thus allowing fluid to be driven according to gear selection, when no reverse happens there is a malfunction of mechanical or hydraulic part, Depending on the condition you can adjust the kick down or adjust the band. A general procedure for automatic transmission band adjustment involves tightening the band adjusting screw to a given torque sequence, back off the adjusting screw from turning while torque-tightening the adjustment screw about a 1/4 turn and lock down the lock nut,and recheck to see if reverse has been restored.
Does it shift into 3rd at the right speed? If 2nd is just missing, try adjusting the kickdown band. (front band). The adjustment screw is on the outside of the case.
