I got a 1987 chevy s10 pick up truck 2 wheel drive v6 2.8l my transmission is not passing 1st gear ?do you know if the kick cable or tv cable needs to be adjusted .

My 1987 s-10 auto 4 speed changed fuel filter plugs wires cap and rotor rebuilt throttle body still runs rough when i try to take off it moves slow then picks up speed. like no excelleration.

Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.

Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands

Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.

Yes the T5 manual transmission uses Dextron III ATF. T5 was used behind the 2.8ltr.

Passing gear is not working

which transmission?

Kick down happens on all transmissions this way.
1:kick cable. (and or vacuum modulator, Hill)
2: TCM brain does all that magic. (PCM data (load, rpm,etc)
and some early years, are 1/2 and 1/2 , yes.
ill look up yours now to see which.
i look at FSM page 75+

shows it has a Governor, so if it fibs about trail speed, sure no passing gear.
ok page 87 shows TV cable.

page 90 lists the causes. read that?
transmission must not slip, does it, flogged up hills?

TV cable dead, or adjusted wrong. end to end, and detent valve at trans case. must move full range.
gov, failure (or line pressures excessive)
coke bottle under throttle, nah
valve body issues aplenty.

this car has no TCM
only a signal, TCC lockup wire from PCM to clutch lock sol.
so , its a 100% Hydramatic trans, with NO BRAIN box.

my guess, is the KICK cable is DEAD> or set wrong.

aka, kick down cable.

it sounds like you installed clutch disc backwards its about the right time frame-- the raised side of disc should face the pressure plate or towards transmission good luck

check your kick down cable attached to the carb, it may be out of adjustment and forcing the trans to stay in "passing gear"

Hi:

Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse

If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.

sounds like either a fuse or the do u have locking hubs that need to be engaged also when using 4 wheel drive there is actually only 2 wheels turning usually passenger front and driver back sometimes u also have to drive backwards to engage and also disengage 4 wheel drive finally it may be a transfer case problem check drive shafts and u joints make sure they are engaged

if all other gears work fine then it's just a matter of changing out the solenoid that controls that gear you will save quite a bit of cash you don't have to change the whole transmission

88 s10 pickup truck will not shift from 3rd gear to overdrive

need more info i had a 1984 chevy half ton and first, second, and third worked fine but lock up didnt work. the problem was there was no vacum at a switch under the hood on the fire wall also your shift linkage could be out of adjustment. try driving down the road and raise up a little on the shifter.
