The cap is label with the #1 plugwire spot, start there with this firing order 15634278 going clockwise and you should be okay, if your cap is not labeled then remove the #1 cylinder spark plug and put the piston on the top of the compression stroke, then remove cap and the rotor will be pointing at #1,good luck

You did not specify what vehicle, but the cylinder numbers are usually stamped on the cap and the cylinders are numbered from front (crank) to back (transmission). On a V configuration the cylinders are numbered left to right from the front of the engine to the back of the engine

Firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2 cyls. # 1-3-5 on drivers side front to back and cyls. # 2-4-6 passenger side front to back.

You will have to get number one up,the piston on number one cylinder,then remove the cap to see where the rotor is pointing,then start your number one plug wire there,make sure you go around the distributor the same way the rotor button turns,and the firing oder is 1563427,if it back fires,then you are 180 degrees out,remove the wires,and start them directly across from where you had number one,then it will start.

V8s are 18436572 going clockwise number 1 should be marked on cap or closest tower facing you standing at the rad
