I am taking it that you are running OS X 10.5-6.

Go to your hard drive then go into users open up your home folder (it will have a house icon on it) then go into library then preferences find the following files and move them to the trash

com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.desktop.plist

Then restart your mac that should fix it.

Hope it helps.

How do I remove icon from my desk top

There are two ways of doing this I prefer the second way.
First way:
Left click on the icon that you no longer want on your desktop and press the delete key on your keyboard. Then click ok, when the confirmation message appears. Now you will have to double click on the Recycle bin and then click file, followed by Empty Recycle Bin.

The Second way:
Left click once on the icon that you no longer want and press both the Delete key on your keyboard and the Shift key together. So that's Shift Delete key together. Then click ok when the confirmation message appears.
This is the shortcut way.

Take care!

Icon short cuts doubled in size. How do I get them back on my desktop to normal size??

Hi,
Windows XP Right click on an empty spot on your desktop and choose properties then click on appearance then click on advanced option, there you can see one tab named items select icon ,same tab right hand side you can select size of the icon(normal size-32), after that click on OK on both windows this steps should change your icon size.

Windows Vista or windows 7
Right click on an empty spot on your desktop and choose Personalize, now choose the first item on the list Windows Color and Appearance, and then click the last link Open classic appearance properties for more color options,
then click on advanced option, there you can see one tab named items select icon ,same tab right hand side you can select size of the icon(normal size-32), after that click on OK.

The recycle bin icon has disappeared from the desktop. Can you help?

Hello

Firstly, what operating system are you using? I am going to give you steps to fix this in both xp and vista.

Windows XP:
  1. Right click any blank area of your desktop. In the menu that comes up, click on “Properties.”
  2. Step 2 Click on the “Desktop” tab, and then click on the “Customize Desktop” button.
  3. Step 3 On the “General” tab, you will see a field with some standard desktop icons. Click on the “recycle bin” icon and then click on “Restore Default.” Click “OK,” and then “Apply,” and finally “OK” again. You should see your recycle bin back in its spot on your desktop. If your recycle bin is still not appearing on your desktop, try the next steps.
  4. Step 4 Right click a blank area of your task bar, point to “Toolbars,” and then click on “Desktop.”
  5. Step 5 Click on the double carets (>>) next to “Desktop” on your taskbar. Look for your recycle bin in the menu that comes up.
  6. Step 6 Drag the recycle bin from the menu to your desktop by clicking on it with your mouse, holding the mouse button down, and moving it to the desktop.
Windows Vista:

First, right-click on the Desktop and select Personalize. In the dialog box on the right hand side, there should be an option called Change desktop icons.
change-desktop-icons-thumb.png
On the Change desktop icons dialog box, go ahead and check the Recycle Bin box to add that back to your desktop. You’ll notice that there is a Full Recycle Bin and Empty Recycle Bin icon.

If you click Apply, your icon should now be back on the desktop.

Really hope this can be of help.

Kind regards

Desktop Icons have shadows and a blue box around title. How do i get rid of this ?

This border on desktop icons can be created when the desktop items have been locked, to unlock the desktop web items right click on an empty area of your desktop. Now select Arrange icons by and uncheck 'Lock web items on desktop' if it has a little tick next to it. If you did not have a tick here then Right click on your my computer icon and view its properties, now click the advanced tab and then on the settings button under performance. Now on the visual effects tab scroll down the list of effects to 'use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop' and put a tick in the box next to it, then click ok. This should remove the shadow border from your desktop icons.
