I went to the library and found this book ( Reader's Digest--- FIX- IT-YOURSELF MANUAL ) How to repair, clean, and maintain anything and everything in and around your home.
On page 283- Solving problems with the drain pump will be helpful to you. If you would like me to copy the page and mail it to you, I would be glad to help, no charge. I always visit the library for information, if I don't find it on the internet.
I hope this will help, Robert
Hello Paul,
Kenmore washers unlike most other brands are a closed market in that the support documentation for them is not readily available anywhere except thru Sears,.. however.. older model washers like yours do use a drive belt and pulley system that provides the drive for the drain pump. If the motor fails to spin up when commanded then that certainly is part, if not all of your problem. A transformer that failed the way you described it may have sent a power surge thru your house and the weakest link that had to dissipate that energy may have been the washer motor. As you say.. it was operating during that event, If you are relatively handy, you may be able to pull the motor out of the washer and have it tested ( sometimes they do what they call a 'hipot' test to check the insulation between windings and then a functional power check to verify that it works.. ) Something else to consider is the motor controller. I assume you have a dial type controller that uses a motor to run thru the wash, spin sequence. Try selecting a wash cycle and switch it on.. the motor should rotate the handle as it attempts to run thru the program. If it fails to rotate, then your washer motor may be ok but your controller motor may be bad or some of the components that work in conjunction with that motor may have failed during a power surge,. The more I thin about it, the less likely your washer motor is the culprit... those motors are pretty robust in design... Try the control panel test first please.. then let me know what happens,.. I'll check in periodically for your reply..
Good luck my friend...

Hi Rick
Thanks for all the help ,yes the handle does rotate and when it gets to the drain point it just shuts down.
Thanks
