Canon CanoScan 9950F Flatbed Scanner Questions & Answers
Connected older firewire cable with adapter to my 9950f via mac mini?
Your connections sound confusing, but you are correct about connectivity being your problem. The more wire and connections between any device and your computer, the worse the results. I have few devices requiring a firewire. Scanners have to transfer a lot of data very quickly. Printers too but they will usually function, just slowly. Your best bet is to simplify it somehow. A long time ago firewires were going to be the big thing by 2000. It never happened and few pc's come with a firewire. I have an old pc I drag out when I need the firewire and it's a big pain. What you are trying is experimental and I guess I'd be trying the same thing. Good luck finding simplicity because it's your best bet.
Lamp shuts down during warm up cycle!
My belief is that it would be inside the scanner itself. In transparency mode the lamp may require more power and shutting off is a safety device if something is failing. Sadly, repairing a scanner costs almost as much as buying a new one.
Scanner's light not moving and not making any noise when i turn it on
Did you install the drivers from the disk that came with the scanner? If not, install all the drivers. Was the scanner light moving before, but now it is not? If so, try re-installing the scanner drivers. If that does not work, the registry may have become corrupted, requiring a technician, OR the scanner is broken. You may be able to buy a replacement scanner at a low cost at Walmart, and this option might also cost less than repairing the registry.
Is the lid for the
Yes, you can detach the lid very easily. Open the lid and when in vertical position, just pull upwards. The lid is held by two metal rods, which will come out when you pull up the lid.
Image scanned is black.
look to see if the scanning lamp come on when you scan a document. if it doesn't, then either the lamp is blown or you need the scanner main board
Re CanoScan 9950F: I opened Toolbox (v.
Hello
Actually you do have to select a program for working with photographs such as Photoshop, or Adobe Elements, maybe Microsoft Paint or Picasa maybe. Then your scanner will scan and the pictures will be saved and they'll be opened in the photo program you have chosen afterwards.
Canon 9950F has lines vertically
Although the problem sounds like a defective CCD, which is not repairable, I would strongly suggest you take the unit back apart and clean it again.
Why?
Because one single speck of dust on the mirrors will cause a vertical line like the one you speak of.
Here is a trick I use to clean the optics on copiers:
1) Get a low lint rag or shop towel NOT a paper towel, tissue, etc
2) Get a bottle of Windex. The stuff with ammonia works better on optics.
3) Spray the Windex on a corner of the rag. Make sure it is very damp.
4) Clean the mirrors/optics horizontally from side-to-side, making sure to get the corners.
5) Use the dry portion of your rag to soak up any residue. Once again, go side to side, not up and down.
6) Shine a flashlight on the optics and make sure there is not a single smudge or speck of dust. If there is, go back to step 4.
Also make sure to clean both sides of the glass.
Good luck! If my answer helped you, please rate me and comment. If not, please follow up with me. Thanks!
How to pick off glass of canoscan 9950F I want to
Unplug power source.
Disconnect cable connecting the lid to the base.
Remove the lid by pulling straight up.
Using a phillips head screwdriver, remove the two screws that can now be seen at the bottom of the slots into which the lid hinges were inserted.
Starting near the hinge slots, pry the black plastic frame up and away from the gray plastic body.
Slide the glass panel and its gray plastic frame towards the back of the scanner and lift off.
How to clean lamp
Make certain that the scanner is not only turned off, but unplugged. And disconnected from the computer.
Then gently lift the glass off - the glass on which youy place whatever you want to scan.
Once the glass is off, you can clean both sides of the glass, but remember which side was facing up.
Also, if the bulb inside is truly dirty, you can gently clean the bulb.
Replace the glass cover, and reverse your procedure.
Plug it in, turn it on, connect it up again, and try it. It should solve your problems.

Canoscan 9950F scanner will not scan with Win XP
Since you have had the scanner a while, you may not have a recent enough driver to work well with XP: until I smashed my 9950F, I was scanning under XP with the ScanGear CS 10.324a driver with no problems (the driver is dated 22 June 2007). You can download it from several sources on the web, I used
"http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=120&modelid=10446#DownloadDetailAct"
Other than that, they report some issues if the system drive is NTFS, but I was using NTFS for my system (and only) drive, so I don't see any reason for this to be your problem.
Good luck,
CWM
Hi My Canoscan 9950f flatbed
I had the same problem, shipping the scanner from Olympia, WA, to Austin, TX, the main glass broke (the sheet of glass you see when you open the scanner lid when it is set to scan an opaque object like an 8x10). I ordered a replacement part from the Canon parts center in New Jersey (732-521-7230) and at the time she told me there were only two left in the country, so you might be able to get the last one.
To replace it you just need to lift off the scanner cover, remove one scree in the bottom of each of the two wells the cover posts fit into, and lift the dark plastic part on the back of the scanner up (I think there are a couple of plastic snaps on the back side but they are not easily broken. Just pull up uniformly on both sides. Then you can remove the broken glass and put the new sheet in (align the plastic guides on the new sheet just like the ones on the old one were aligned).
Unfortunately, my scanner still doesn't work -- so I may have to give up on it. It seems stuck on a fairly well known failure code (2,178,0) when I start to scan and Canon customer support says there are no authorized service centers for the 9950F (I wonder if all their scanners are not repairable?).
Canoscan 9950F won't scan, says scanner locked, but it isn't
I was surprised by the same problem this morning. First time I've had a problem with in years. Checked the lock... it was already unlocked. I solved the problem by unhooking the USB cable from the hub, restarting my Mac (seems to be the key), replugging the cable and restarting the scanner. Worked like a charm. Hope it works for you!
Scanner Glass Smashed
More than likely yes, unless you like to mod things than perhaps you could replace it with plexi glass. Could not promise it wouldn't even work after that but would also take time and know how.
