bad sectors depending on what has caused it can be increadibly hard if not impossible to rid yourself of them. try opening start and searching for disk defrag. set it for as deep a scan as you can. if you can get it to do it before you boot into windows to allow it to shift and sort booting data and un accessible data in windows. before you let it go also click on learn more about disk defrag and click on the bottom link in the help manual which shows you how to make sure the scanner will find and fix bad sectors . second would be to rid yourself of any and all unwanted files with disk cleanup and manually finding and eliminating programs you dont use especially the HP standard stuff they so dearly love to burden your system up with. thirdly would be finding a good optimisation program. i use TuneUp utilities which to me seems to make it run better. 4th would be replace your hard drive with a solid state hard drive and start clean again with fresh installations. use an external drive mounter to transfer all files you require and shove the old drive in the back of a filing case as a backup. if you use option 4 if you have a secondary hard drive swap page filing to that one to reduce wear. after option 4 if it is still slow you are likely looking at RAM or a faster laptop altogether because one solid state drive will give it a kick up the back end so much you will believe its a whole new beast. and i have 2.for your linux side... i doubt you can do a lot to improve on it as it already is at its bare bones performance peak except for increasing its drive size.

old PCs do that, for many reasons. but no PC told at all just HP. 40 years of PCs ,10000 + models nobody can guess ever. but I do have the answer, in pure generic form. did you buy the PC like that used and bad Wifi. ?

1. the wifi card is missing, as was super common 10+ years ago.
2. someone put in the wrong card, not from HP list
3. HP blacklists (bios blocks) none HP cards (wifi)
4. the card needs a driver to work if not it is dead or 1/2 dead.
5. the PC needs 1 more driver to make the wifi buttons all work , all buttons related, if not they are dead or act odd.
6. The OS is infected, no OS told at all, not one clue nor if upgraded the OS, and not vast drivers are wrong or missing, (classic)

bad news now your bricked it just like miillions did google bios update bricked my PC and cry. why are you here and not at HP.com only they can recover bios. they changed the rules now 10 time. so only they know this, and are pain to deal with.
