We have a Roper by Whirlpool RT21LMXKQ freezer on top. Friday night it started clicking and the compressor would come on but only run for a millisecond before it cut off. Satruday morning we left if off for 3-4 hours and we plugged it back in after cleaning all areas we could reach (we also had taken off the back panel and the compressor was too hot to touch!) We plugged it back in at noon on Saturday and it has run fine until this morning (Monday) now the clicking is happening again and the compressor comes on runs for a second (a little longer than it did Friday Night) and then immediatley cuts off again. It is still fairly cold inside as we are keeping the door shut but we do not know how to diagnose the problem??? We are going to clean the front stuff with one of those long soft brushes in a minute but I think a switch is what is causing this? The cooling fan still runs even when the compressor cuts off and the ice still forms and drops and the fridge is still pretty cool???? HELP!!! This fridge was just purchased in 2006 I think it hsould last longer than four years???

It sounds like a start relay problem. try and see if you can remove the start relay and purchase a new one. You may find that you have a capacitor start & run, it could also be the start/run capacitor failing. at least the compressor is working, so all evidence leads to start relay failure or start/run capacitor failure. Try these first they are cheap enough to buy. if you are not sure you can check this yourself get a local sparky to look at it.

I have Mod. # RT21LMXKQ. There is only one thermostat control. How do I regulate the temperature in the refridgerator and freezer?

Walter,
Usually the thermostat control knob is in the refrigerator compartment, and the knob in the freezer controls how much cold air is moved past the damper down into the refrigerator area. All of you cooling is generated in the freezer section and the fan forces is downward. Your thermostat usually has a bulb that senses the temperature that turns the compressor on and off. The factory settings are in the middle of the dial on both areas. Hope this helps!

Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling after storm

Assuming that both freezer and refrigerator temperatures have risen and the humming sound that you heard was followed by a sudden click more than likely the start device on the compressor has gone bad. This is a common problem with all Whirlpool refrigerators (KitchenAid is Whirlpools top of the line product and suffers the same problem).

Roper top freezer clicking and not cooling

I would start by changing the relay on the compressor, thats more than likely where the clicking noise is coming from. Whirlpool brands are notorious for that part going bad, especially ion the early years.

18 cubic foot roper is clicking, but not freezing.

yes the "relay" on your unit has burnt out. if you shake it and pepper looking pieces come out of it that will verify that you need to replace the relay.
nice work finding the exact problem by yourself and now all you have to do is buy a relay and plug it in to get things back to normal.
also be sure to clean the coils under the unit as when the compressor gets too hot it will cause the relay to fail. it is very common and you can fix this yourself.

Frigerator not cooling

HI thanks for the question. the water at the bottom means a clogged drain tube. which would cause the fridge not to get cold. its blocking the air vets , so the cold air, cant get down to the fridge section. . remove back wall ,of the freezer and clean all the ice build up. the drain tube goes all the way down, to the bottom drain tray .clean that tube. thanks the appliance doc. please rate my answer.
