Engine is getting only about 13mpg - doesn't speed up very fast and change into gears. sounds like cracking noise sometimes when turning. I was told the vehicle is to be in 4h while normal driving.
You can use fifth anytime you are going better than 45. Don't use it on steep hills or when you feel the engine laboring. If automatic, generally fourth gear shift is at about 2000 rpm and will stay engaged at 45. Cracking noise generally is dry ball joints (no fittings either) Lube the remainder of the front end components and if it continues that's likely where to look.

Hi, the using fifth isn't helpful - the vehicle has no fifth. it is a 94 jeep cherokee limited - it is an automatic w/4 wheel drive.
The person I bought it from said that the 4h has to be engaged to be able to engage the transmission, they said it is that way all the time.
There is also a trouble light which is coming on intermittently which says"service 4wheel drive switch"
What I want to know is-am I supposed to have 4h engaged all the time and is this switch light causing me to have power issues.
How do I Service the 4wheel drive switch w/out going to a dealer
