This is normally a sign of a leaking exhaust valve, it is too tight. the popping is unburned fuel leaking into the exhaust and then exploding with the exhaust from the next firing, sorry but a big job

SOURCE: 2002 DODGE GRAND CARAVAN Steering Noise

I had a similar problem with a popping - clanking noise when I was turning the Steering Wheel and going at a slow speed.
See if you can have someone listen outside the car while you drive it to be sure.
I replaced the one drive axle and the problem was solved.

SOURCE: popping noise in rear suspension

Check the rear anti roll bar end links. This is a common item to fail as the originals were plastic ! If they are worn my advice is to replace them with some aluminum ones that come with nylon urethane bushes.

SOURCE: Popping sound from Chrysler Pacifica

it is called a clockspring.
the other thing to check is that the rear part of the steering wheel is clearing the column shroud properly.
call a few places in your area and how much it is to change the clockspring.

SOURCE: loud humming noise when driving theres a vibration

I would try to pinpoint exact noise location.
It could be either a bearing, a balljoint, or to much pressure on power steering belt.

I have a 1999 GMC Jimmy with a loud popping noise on the right Front tire area

Is this 4wd? If so, might be a drive-shaft joint or a wheel bearing? I wouldn't drive it till you get it checked out. I don't like popping noises.

97 jimmy wont go back to 2 wheel drive

Check everything in that right front driveline. Could have a problem that when the four wheel drive puts some tension on it, it stops making noise.
