It sounds like that cable you rigged has finally bit the dust. It may be partially grounding out (shorting) or in the opposite, may be corroded and have too much resistance. Disconnect it from the battery and check the resistance with a multimeter.
Hey Penny, there could be a bunch of things going on , try disconnecting the battery ,negative first then positive and let it sit for a few min. 10 or so then reconnect and see if every thing goes back to normal ,do you have any check engine lights on ? or stored codes in the OBD computer.?

Did you have the alternator tested on the car, or off ? If the alternator charges but the light stays on, the problem could be in the wiring on the car.
Sounds like you have a bad alternator. The only reason you have a battery in your car is to start it. If the alternator goes bad and stops charging then the vehicle will use the power that is left in the battery until it is used up. Once the car is running, all electrical goes through the alternator. So what i think is that you got just enough power in the battery to get it started and then to run for a little bit.Ignition, light and everything pretty much runs on power generated from the alternator. I bet if you put a good charge on your battery it will run longer. Some vehicles (mostly ford) have a fuse for the charging system (alternator) so depending on the vehicle you might want to start checking the fuses but you still should give your battery a good charge before hand. The battery light usually comes on when the alternator is not putting out sufficient voltage equal to or above the battery voltage. Sometimes the alternator can be generating enough voltage to make the light go out but not enough current to recharge the battery properly especially when driving at night with lights etc on. Eventually the battery will not have enough charge left to start the engine. The most common cause of low output is worn brushes but your description tends to suggest that the electronic regulator inside the alternator has an intermittent fault. An auto electrician will be able to diagnose the problem fairly quickly and probably offer to fit an echange unit.
if the lights are bright and you hear a clicking and your heat blows good, the head lights are still real bright after trying to start a few time replace the starter (you can try to hit the starter with a hammer otr somthing heavy a few times and then try to start if it sounds better or starts replace the starter) if the battery goes dead try to jumpit if it starts then dies after a few min its the alt if it starts runs good and you let it run for about half hour shut it off and it wont restart rite away its the battery.
