Question about 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

1 Answer

I have a 1997 montero sport. It's been a great car but over last couple years I've replaced the altenator 3 times and the battery twice. Everything gets dim in my car and I start loosing all power until the car dies. Woul it be possible that there is a wire that is grounding somewhere that makes my car over time loose all it's power. Bad battery cables, stereo wires? I want to keep it because I love the car but it has stumped me. After I put an altenator in (under warranty so I'm not spending the money, takes me 20 monutes to put new one in) it run great for 6 months and I have same problem.

Take a count of what you have running and how much power each item draws. It it is more that the output from the alternator then you will need a bigger alternator. An accredited auto electrician should have a cable clamp amp meter that will give you an idea of the total current draw. Check the condition and tension of the drive belt as if it is hard or loose then the alternator will not work at full capacity

I just have the normal stuff running. Today I could tell that I was loosing power but it didn't dawn on me until later in the day. Everytime I turned the blinker on or the windshield wipers the radio shut down and antenna came down. The altenator is the same size altenator as what first came in it. I will look into those options and see if that helps. Any other possible solutions than send me my way. Because I like doing most of the work myself but I can't do the big stuff. Thank you.

SOURCE: Lo-beams not working

Hi manolonusa,

It may have something to do with your headlights, but my first thought is they are just a symptom of another problem.

I'd check on the alternator. If the ALT fails, a good battery will keep the car running for quite a while. Sometimes the first symptoms are the dimming of the headlights. So:

  • Make sure belts are tight.
  • Get a meter and test the output voltage while its running (be careful when doing this).
  • Check the voltage at the battery when stopped and when running.
  • Same thing with headlights on and off.
Get back to me with the results. Once the alternator is ruled out we can check a possible headlight problem. But this way, at least you won't be stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

SOURCE: Daughter called me ..car wont

it sounds like you have blown fuse to the Alternator.. I don't know what car you are talking about but they charging systems vary.. But if alternator isn't getting all the power it needs it won't charge. this should be checked.

good luck

Battery not holding charge, not enough voltage, or the starter has went bad again. Check battery voltage, if its ok, then replace starter again.

The truck stalled a few days ago. It was jumped and ran fine. Yesterday it stalls again, but won't the battery won't hold a charge. It was towed to the shop and they said everything tested fine once they...

sound like might have a prooblem with the charging system. if the altenator is not charging the battery while driving then when the battery voltage gets too low (prob around 10volts) then the computers will shut down, then when jump started it gets some power back, and when the battery is charged will all work fine for a while.
does your model have the voltage gauge in the dash? should be over 12 volts when engine running, 14volts is a good charge rate. and should stay up above 12 all the time, with lights on air condon etc...
and altenators can be funny, work sometimes, and not atother times,

How to replace antenna on a 1997 mitsubishi montero

We just did this the last week in a '99 Sport. It took about two hours.

Take your front tire off and loosen about 5-9 bolts that hold the innter fender panel on. Then you can pull back and disconnect 2-3 bolts that hold the antenna in. My problem now is that I can't get the new rod to retrieve back into the antenna.

Hope this help (remember rated an comment this)

Alternater trouble Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2003

I have had the exact problem. I've changed altenator 3 times also and it has the same leak, but I've changed altenator an batterys over 2 year span. It just happend to me today after not driving it for 5 months. It's been in storage while I was away. Drive it fine for 2 days but today the radio kept shutting off and finally the car died right in the middle of the road. Bought a new battery because I had a warranty on last battery, but bought it just to get it home and in the driveway. Did you ever find out what was wrong with it?
