Lo-beams not working

My battery warning light came on tonight while my headlights dimmed. Battery is ok, car starts repeatedly. Everything electrical works except for lo-beams. Fuses for lo-beams under hood ok, and switched lo-beam relay with foglight relay with no change. I installed new Sylvania H1 bulbs 2.5 months ago-could they be bad? Or could ther be another problem? Loose or bad ground somewhere?

Hi manolonusa,

It may have something to do with your headlights, but my first thought is they are just a symptom of another problem.

I'd check on the alternator. If the ALT fails, a good battery will keep the car running for quite a while. Sometimes the first symptoms are the dimming of the headlights. So:

  • Make sure belts are tight.
  • Get a meter and test the output voltage while its running (be careful when doing this).
  • Check the voltage at the battery when stopped and when running.
  • Same thing with headlights on and off.
Get back to me with the results. Once the alternator is ruled out we can check a possible headlight problem. But this way, at least you won't be stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

You have a dead battery.
The procedure to fix it is as follows:
1) Charge battery.
2) check alternator belt tension. If loose, tighten or replace.
3) If still no start, replace battery.

2003 kia optima battery light came on and headlights went dim and then out but high beams still work, dash lights are dim and the car still runs.

The alternator has stopped charging for some reason.
First check alternator drive belt is ok;
Check dash 'battery' (or 'ALT') light illuminates when ignition on and motor not running- if not, check 'ALT' lamp is not blown and connections to alternator are ok;
If all above ok, the alternator may be faulty.

Click on the link.
The top wires to headlamp are voltage for hi or lo beam.
The bottom black wire is ground. You can use a test light to check voltage and ground.
