4M40 engine lacking power and blowing black smoke.

Vehicle is actually a Mitsubishi Pajero SWB 4x4. It is fitted with a 4M40 engine which is lacking in power and blowing black smoke. Injector pump and injectors have been overhauled (calibrated) and a new turbo has been fitted but problem persists. Fuel filter, primer pump, air filter replaced but problem still persists.

what about this,,,mine has power when you engage reverse gear(its auto) but has no power when on drive gears.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Who did the calibration on the pump and injectors? It could be that the specs used to calibrate the pump was wrong. Did you check the pump timing?

My 1995 4m40 mitsubishi pajero has its turbo charge seized and emmiting black smoke,it is poweless but the deisel in the fuel tank turns black in colour and can stop whilst driving.I cleaned the tank and...

The engine is not designed to run without the turbo. Fuel pump recirculates fuel to the tank to control pressure while driving and engine is running so poorly fuel is being diluted. Fix the turbo.

Engine oil get less every two weeks in my pajero 4m40

Diesels do lose a little oil out the blow-by tube. If the engine temp. is higher then normal then you will lose more then normal amounts. If you are not leaking it then you are burning it, Possibly worn rings, head-gasket, or oil leak inside turbo. 68 MPH and higher doesn't sound unusual, is the engine still stock?

White smoke is a sign of unburnt diesel fuel, check your glowplugs as thats the most common cause when starting .It will start but not hot enough to burn fuel at start up, also check glowplug relay if not the plugs
