Question about 1993 Toyota Camry V6

1 Answer

Engine cuts out within 3 minutes of startup

1993 Toyota Camry V6 (3VZ-FE) XV10R (VDV10R-EPDKQ). Engine cuts out, and won't re-start for 2 to 30 seconds, sometime after starting when cold. Does not always occur. Happens in both summer and winter. Rarely happens more than once per engine start-up. Once engine has been running for at least 3 minutes, problem does not occur until next cool-down. Engine management system indicates error code 14. Tacho is reading low at all times, and reads very low when the fault is likely to occour, sometimes indicating only 200 RPM when engine is more likely doing 2500 RPM. The rest of the time, the tacho is reading about half of what it should be. Two Toyota service centers, and one independent mechanic, have no idea of the cause and want to start replacing components until the fault clears. I can't afford that. Has anyone encountered this fault before? Thanks.

I have resolved this issue. It was in the igniter. The ground link inside the module had a dry joint. A little touch with a soldering iron fixed it.

Toyota camry problem

Sounds like a possible lean fuel issue. If you want to try something replace the coolant sensor that controls the fuel injection system. Otherwise take to a mechanic that can hook a scanner to it and check the datastream when it is cold to determine if it is a coolant sensor or oxygen sensors or just nwhat the cause is. You might also try some fuel system cleaner like Techron.

1993 Toyota Camry IAC cleaning

1) remove the black intake hose from the throttle body
2) get a can of throttle body/intake cleaner
3) be VERY careful if you decide to use the straw included with the can of cleaner, it can detach and go inside of your intake manifold.
4) spray inside and use a rag to remove junk from throttle plate(front and back side), hold the straw on the cleaner can and spray into the hole just ahead of the throttle plate, let soak for 10 minutes or so
5) reattach intake hose and start engine - you may get black smoke/rough idle for a minute as junk exits the engine
