Check to see if there is a recall for your vehicle on this or any problem. Probably your lid isn't set properly, and just needs adjusting, or the seal was damaged.

SOURCE: Found water in trunk with spare tire in 1999

After 11 years of use you can pretty much expect this as the trunk and lighting seals harden/shrink with age.

I'm based in the UK so I'm totally unfamiliar with the Eldorado, the following advice is generic to the many makes and models which suffer the same common fault.

Check the trunk lip seal for any damage or gaps. If damaged then you must replace the seal, but if there's a gap between two ends then it may be possible to gently work each end along until they comfortably meet. Start at least 18" each side of the gap to massage the seal along its length in the direction you need to shift it. Pulling on the end of the seal will either damage it or will just temporarily stretch it. If you cannot easily close the gap, renew the complete seal. Some folks advise smearing Vaseline (petroleum jelly) onto lip seals to help make them watertight, but don't. Many of these seals contain a proportion of natural rubber and mineral-oil based products corrode them. They're intended to work without any goop smeared onto them, but if you're on a tight budget then a hardened seal can be temporarily improved by smearing silicone grease onto it, but if you lean over the lip and get it on your clothes then you will understand why the seals are designed to work without additives.

Next, pull out the spare tire and check to see if the recess has any open drainage holes. If it has, then they've lost their rubber blanking plugs: the holes are only there to allow drainage of paint and chemicals used when the car body was being manufactured. If they do have rubber plugs then double check that they are not damaged and that the metal around the hole is not corroded. You may have to temporarily remove the plug in order to do this properly. Also check any other through -body plugs or grommets (allow cables and wires to pass through) in a similar fashion.

The final step is to check the seals around the lighting clusters. You can either remove the clusters and visually inspect the seals (it's often easiest to simply replace them as a matter of course) or you can thoroughly dry the inside of the trunk, and then sprinkle a dusting of talc, chalk or even flour around the inside of the trunk on the bodywork around where the cluster sits. Use the sprinkler head on a watering can or hosepipe to deposit water onto the cluster from all angles (close the trunk first!). Any leakage may show on the dusting powder and you can then trace the source, but this method is not always entirely dependable so I always opt to remove the clusters. When replacing the clusters, tighten the fasteners evenly to avoid distorting the cluster/body panel and I always smear silicone grease on the sealing faces.

Silicone grease is sold at plumbing shops as "o-ring lubricant" and also at diving shops where the same stuff is sold in tiny tubes for a far higher price as it's certified as food grade (non-toxic). Both are the same though apart from the expensive certification by the manufacturer. Do not use silicone sealant as used for sealing bath tubs, kitchen sinks and shower trays. This gives off corrosive acetic acid as it cures and will corrode any metalwork it touches.

Note that one other common cause is incorrect use of a pressure washer. High power jets directed straight at panel shut line and around lighting clusters can easily leak in as the pressure far exceeds what they were designed to resist.

I hop e that I've helped and provided some useful suggestions. Please take a moment to rate my reply.

2009 altima collects rain water in the tire jack area in the trunk? It comes from underneath or alongside the jack area? Any ideas for the source of the leak?

Hunting water leaks is a pain in the tailbone job to do. I'm assuming yours has the jack in the floor of the trunk, under the carpet.
The spare wheel well is the lowest point in the trunk so the water will collect there regardless of where the leak is. Start with the simplest tools, a flash light and the palm of your hand.
How much water is collecting and how fast does it fill up? Rain water coming up through the floor is unlikely unless the floor is damaged.
First take everything out of the trunk that wasn't in there when it came out of the factory. Take a really good look at the carpet and trunk side liners. Use the palm of your hand and feel the floor carpet for wetness. Your feeling to see if it is wet in a particular area. Using the flashlight look for darker patches as carpets often darken in color when wet. Move to the rear of the trunk and feel the liner on the back of the rear seats. Next run your hand over the side panels where the wheel arches are. This will give you clues as to where the leak is possibly coming from.
If the whole trunk carpet and liners are bone dry the leak is from under the car.
All the doors, the trunk lid and the sun roof are fitted with rubber seals to stop rain and road splashes getting inside the vehicle. Over time these perish and start to leak. Run your hand around the underside of the rubber seal the trunk lid sits on when closed. This is the most obvious place it will leak from. You can do this on each door as well because water can travel a large distance before it finds somewhere to create a puddle. A Sunroof can also leak but they tend to cause puddles in the foot well.
If you get a few dry days you can test for leaks with a hose pipe. Keep the trunk closed and make sure the inside of it is totally dry. Remove any spray nozzle from the hose so it flows at regular pressure. Carefully aim the water so it only flows over the trunk lid. Let it flow for a minute or two trying not to soak the doors at the same time. Turn off the water and leave the car alone for about 10 minutes. Wipe off any excess water on the trunk lid, open it and see if its now wet inside the trunk. Yes? the trunk seal is leaking. You can use this method for the doors and sun roof as well. Door and trunk seals are usually just a 'Push on/Pull off' fit so you can easily change them yourself.

Trunk lid filling with water

check the gasket inside your trunk, were it meets your trunk lid first, then if thats ok, pull your spare tire out and make sure the drain holes have the rubber plugs in them, if you have had an accident and it was in the rear end area, bring it back to the shop that fixed it oh one more thing, your trunk lid might need to be adjusted, check to see if it lines up, if the gaps around it are all the same, if not, not to adjust it,

!991 buick park avenue. the trunk fills with water during heavy rains..resealing rear window didn't help..where in the heck is the drain plug for the trunk..if any?

There is no drain plug. For the leaks be certain to investigate: sunroof drains, taillight seals, and the trunk seal. Many trunk seals actually channel water into the trunk. New designs are available on many GMs.

92 cadillac deville- back seat floor boards fill up with water (rain?) front floors and trunk are damp, have cleaned seals around doors, trunk, hood, etc but back seat floors still fill up almost to the...

Water leaks can be really evasive, It could be coming from the rear glass where it seals against the body or it could be coming from the seams where the quarter panels and roof panels meet. (at the lower corners of the back glass/trunk lid area.) The best way to find these things are to water-test the vehicle. You can look for water entering the trunk area if you can find someone you trust to run water over the trunk and back glass area while you are inside the trunk with a flashlight. If this does not yield any answers, it may be necessary to remove the rear seat and interrior panels and headliner to look for water running into the cabin area. If you see any water, follow it uphill to locate the point of entry. I have even seen windshield area roof leaks fill the rear floor pans of a car that was parked nose-up on a hill.

That should do it unless the gasket is TORN.

Water in spare tire compartment of trunk after heavy rain.

U need to carefully check the seams of the sheetmetal for any sign of water or dirt from the road, there is no common leak on these cars, in fact they seldom leak anywhere, the water is most likely splash up from the road, unless u left something out like it was sitting when this water accumulated. Let me know that info.
