3800 engine My impala surges and will stall only when the engine is hot. When I am idling is when it will stall, if I keep it up over 1000rpms it doesn't stall. It almost sounds like a back fire when it idles for a while. First time it started I was idling at a light and I thought someone hit me from behind. I went to Automart they hooked it up to there hand held scanner and the error code came up P0102 MAF. I replaced it and yet still I have the same problem. Any suggestions? I love my car, but last night is stalled before I came to a complete stop, and the car behind me almost hit me, I need my car to get back and forth to work no bus service here in the early mornings.

Sounds like you may have a bad vacuum leak. On the 3800, this is commonly caused by a bad upper intake plenum. Check for vacuum leaks elsewhere first though. (i.e. brake booster, hoses, etc.).

What would cause my idle to be all over the place the car will not adle smooth it is either to high or it will act like it will stall and it smells like it is flooding when it almost stalls .

Here are the most common causes of idle surge, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake

3800 series2 flutters, missfires with powerloss when acceleration is apllied but idles fine, surges when warm and seems to run normal when very light on throttle. eventually gains and maintains highway

Have the intake gaskets been replaced? you could be getting a little coolant in the cylinder. these are a SUPER common problem on 3.8 series 2 engines

When I start my odyssey it starts surging. I found a small rubber hose on the right side of the engine, but don't know where the other end of the hose goes....Help

WHAT COUNTY???????????????????????????????????
hot engine, cold or both?/// a key question
WHAT ENGINE: ( usa list , ONLY)
2.2 L F22B I4
2.2 L F22B6 I4
2.3 L F23A I4 2.3 L F23A7 I4
the fsm covers this. hose thing.... all hose can be followed,
unless its axle vents on 4wd cars. (they go no where, special)
is surging the only symtom.?
no engine stalls.?
lack of power in any gear or hills.
no misfiring?
no flooding.?
starts easy/?

ok what is surge, that it really is idle controls bad or out of comtrol
1: idle controls bad. (isc dead?)
2: or engine is running way too lean, and ISC cant keep a grip on idle.

easy huh?
and #3 misfiring so bad the idle controls fail.
are all fuses good?
is the CEL lamp glowing , then goes out running engine.
no , the scan it. or do the flash DTC codes trick.

a good tech ,first finds out if the engine holds closed loop status
hot. at idle, if not, he fixes that first.
as he/she knows that idle is the last thing to work right, in EFI.

one other way to get surge is air leaks (aka. vacuum leaks)
if the engine (unsaid option) is MAP based, it will race fast
with any vacuum leak, and it dont take much of a leak
to make the ISC idle controller go nuts.

so repost , hot/cold both questions
and actual RPM numbers. we need numbers
is the dash Tachometer missing. ????
and what engines in car.

all lean engines surge.
all ISC systems can surge if out of control , not all do this. just 1/2
if the ISC surges, it means its trying hard to gain back control.
this is called a software servo loop.
The ECU is programmed to hold rpm near say 800 RPM hot.
and is very digressive in that role.
I have a 91 car that will surge, with any vacuum leaks.
(by design) depends on which engine.

Increase then decrease idle when engine is cold especially

cold engine idle surge. (problem)
RPM range of surge not stated
300-700 or 800 to 1500? (range is critical to diagnosis)

bad fuel
running summer fuel in winter (running old fuel?)
needs a tune up bad, see the list in the operator guide.
idle speed controller, sticking or EGR valve same. (clean them)
location not stated, so cant guess about local air temps.?
no other symptoms, lack of engine power? etc?
was it ok last week, or better, when was the last time it was OK?
1week, 1year?
surge , causes, on a tuned engine might be:
1: too lean. so lean the ISC can not control idle. rpm low, stalling
2: too rich, flooding, stalling, spark plugs foul (look at them)
3: weak compression in 1 or more cylinders.
4: bad spark.
5: air leaks, in the plenum causing , ISC to lose control.
why high RPM?

especially?
well that means it fails hot too.
and there is a simple tests. for hot surge.
is engine fully hot? 180F and holds solid there?
say rpm is about 800
and you turn on head lights, heater fan and (not AC) and defrost.
the RPM must hold or the ISC is failing.
ISC -= idle speed controls. (all EFI has this function)

Battery installed backwards at store

I would have this checked out to make sure they did not damage the computer, the check engine light may have been due to battery disconnect , the idle problem may be due to the same reason, it may need to relearn idle and other sensor inputs that were lost due to battery removal and fuse popping, this should take a day or two of driving it.
if you are still having a problem after that then have it checked.
