If it started to open then closes , your up down limit switches could be out of alignment but if it starts to open then falls closed you probably have a broken torsion springmaking the door too heavy for the opener to overpower.

What does the purple button light flashing on 1/2 horsepower craftsman garage door opener
I think the adjustment mode is on.
For example, that's from Craftsman manual:
""
Setting the Force
The force setting button is located on the left panel of the motor unit. The force setting measures the amount of force required to open and close the door.
1. Locate the purple button on the left panel of the motor unit (Figure 1).
2. Push the purple button twice to enter the opener into Force Adjustment Mode (Figure 2). The LED (Indicator Light)
will flash quickly.
3. Push the remote control or control console (Figure 3). The door will travel to the DOWN (close) position.

Actually, you should just read carefully your garage door opener unit's manual.

Why is my garage door suddenly reversing when going down?
Deb, that reversal is a child safety device - if the bottom edge of the door detects contact with any object, it'll immediately reverse so it doesn't kill a child. Or a cat, dog, whatever.
The opener mechanism should have a stop switch that prevents the door from closing hard against the floor - that stop switch needs to be adjusted so that the door will stop JUST before hard contact. That'll take care of it "bouncing" off the floor & reversing. As to it reversing before it touches the floor... examine both guide rails closely to see if there's any obstruction that the door's bottom edge may be contacting to trigger the child protection reversal switch.
Gargedoor closes and when immediately opens
That sounds like an adjustment issue. Say you leave something in the path of the garage door coming down. As soon as it hits it, it is going to immediately stop and move back up. With the garage door improperly adjusted, it is "thinking" it is hitting something when it touched the ground. There should be adjustment screws on the motor. Check your user manual to reference.
What could be the problem with garage door opener?
Many openers have a short length of wire that serves as a primitive antenna; ensure the wire is hanging free.
The remote is a radio frequency transmitter, the other end in the garage has a tuned receiver.
Either one of these can drift from their original operating frequency which then can cause the system to fail.
Most modern openers are encoded so that they can resist operating with CBs and amateur radio signals and most require a one-time operation that allows the inside receiver to recognize (and remember) its dedicated remote by its frequency and the unique code the remote produces.
While this principle makes openers more secure, it also allows for more failures of the type you are having.
Take a look at the manuals available at the following site to see is there is one close enough to your model number to let you restore the programming between remote and receiver:
