Some TVs only recognise digital information, (your movies), in certain formats. A format is the computer 'language' it is saved as. Get someone who is good with computers to check which format the movies are and which formats the TV actually accepts. The movies could also be "Write Protected" which means the format, (language), the movie is written in has been altered to prevent copies being made.

Without any registration code, you should be able to download a firmware update or drivers for free. General web searches of your unit's model number can usually find these updates faster than browsing the manufacturer's website.

There is not usually much to go wrong with one of these units, and it would be rare that the driver software or firmware being out of date would cause the unit not to function at all, but rather, merely to function less well.

If your unit is inoperative, and external, the most likely problem is the power supply to the unit. Partial voltage can sometimes light the Power LED without actually providing enough current for the unit to operate. The unit should have power specs printed on the brick, and a replacement is probably available online, and possibly someplace like Radio Shack. It might not be worth the cost though, as prices of new units tend to drop faster than replacement part costs do.
