create your account and register the device while it is connected to the computer
once you do this, you will download their webupdate program and use that to update it.
for map updates, you would then login your account and use the map update feature in it.

update your units firmware by download garmin webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Download the program, install and run it. Follow the onscreen prompts to get your unit updated and it should clear up any freezing issues.

I recently purchased the lifetime update from garmin for my nuvi255w. after I updated it, it is not right. I can't go to another state nor can I search for citites. Where did I go wrong?

It sounds like you have a corrupt map file, i would recommend re-downloading and re-installing your current mapset, if that dosent work give the unit a firmware update using Garmins WebUpdater software. it can be obtained here http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

My Nuvi255W will be giving verbal directions fine, and then it stops in mid-sentence. After I enter a new address, it will stop in mid-sentence again.

I recommend you backup your favorites. Then I suggest a hard reset. This will clear up some erratic behavior. Finally, replace the firmware and system software using webupdate.

Replacing the firmware should allow it to run reliably like new

No problem, but we just bought a Garmin 255W GPS and was wondering "how long to keep on re-charge to get the full 5 hour usage from the battery"? I have searched everywhere and the owners...

The manual for the nuvi255W, which can be downloaded from Garmin.com, says it takes 4 hours to recharge a low battery. You can do it buy hooking it up to your computer which would have to be booted up.
