Hi.
The camera is asking you to set the quick control icon. Press SET button to set the Quick Control. The Quick Control modes are presets that are used in shooting. After pressing SET, use arrows to move between settings and use the wheel to change settings. I cannot explain all modes and features of a 500D, it will take many pages. You need to read the manual to understand the meaning of your camera's function. SLR cameras are not compact digital cameras. To get the most basic settings set Quick Control to full Auto. Set AF and ISO to AUTO.
Here manual, you find more at page 102: INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Please refer to the pages indicated in diagram below to understand the range of settings for each single option. The diagram is referring to the instruction manual pages:

Hi.
The strange thing is the flash firing and camera not shooting. When camera is waiting for Quick control screen the flash will not ordinarily fire.
Try resetting the camera by removing main battery and the accessory coin battery. Remove lenses, then reassemble everything. That will help in case the camera controller board is frozen.

It's the quick control icon. Page 102, 103 of the manual.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i. It will take pictures when I turn the Automatic Focus off. But if it is set to AF, the flash works and then you can not take a picture. It continues to say "Set Q" in the lower left corner of the display screen, despite the fact that I have set all the settings.
Thank you for your help. I have read the manual cover to cover. I understand how the Quick Control menu works and have set it many times. I believe the problem is something with the auto focus. I plan to take it to a camera repair store. I do realize this is not a digital camera and understand it's capabilities. Thanks.
I have gone through every setting on the dial and set each setting and the set Q still appears. Is there anything else to do to finalize it?
This happens because the Autofocus on the lens has got jammed - maybe some grit in it. It's the lens not the camera. I took it off and turned it each way on MF and that sorted it. It should work on MF anyway.
