Hi Ken,
Power on the unit in the dark room then shine with the flashlight directly in the screen, you will barely see the images. This is because your backlight is not functioning. The following reason is the caused.
1. Power supply - missing B+(supply voltage) coming from this board feeding the inverter board. This was caused by faulty transistor, dried/leaky electrolytic capacitor, open fusible resistor.
2. Inverter board - even the B+ is good from the power supply, if the fuse, driver transistor, driver transformer was faulty no output to the backlight resulting to black picture.
3. Busted backlight - even inverter board is good but if this was busted resulting to black picture also.
Diagnosing the fault is technical and if you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't fix it yourself, I would advice you to look for an experienced technician to isolate the problem.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

The backlight inverter is what powers the screen to "light up." You will need to check your power supply for the proper voltages going to the backlight inverter. If those all check out ok, then you need to replace your inverter to get your image back. You can find a new inverter by searching "inverter + model number of your tv.

I was watching TV and suddenly the screen went black. No picture, no sound. On/off timer LED on TV started blinking. I could not turn it on (or off) with remote or ON switch on TV. I found that if I...

The television is shutting itself off to protect itself. The blinking light is a code pattern. The specific code determines whether or not you need an LCD Controller Unit, Main Board, power supply or something else. You would need the service manual. There are parts distributors you can get it from and the parts as well. If soldering and tv repair is not something you are entirely familiar you may want to seek a tv repair person. The manufacturer's support may walk you through the service menus to complete a factory reset depending upon the symptoms.

Picture fails

hi,

sounds like a high voltage issue, it will have to go in, i dont recommend self servicing that. may sound strange but Ive seen several tvs go by way of spouse having a plant above or near the tv, that person watering it and a few hours later mad spouse sitting in front of a busted tv that sounded just like that. also I had a cat that sprayed one and it did that. just a couple ideas for ya.

Picture and sound gone

your fuses may have blown off.

open the back panel and check all the fuses. There are a bunch of fuses in there, my tv has 5 altogether.

I hope this is the problem.

No picture, hear sound, television will shut off after a few seconds.

Lamp life is only a few thousand hours. Hopefully its only the lamp that made to noise. Don't turn on again until lamp is replaced.

Picture vanished

The problem might have started because of loose conections in the vertical circuit,if the vertical circuit fails completly the screen blanks out to prevent a line being burnt in the picture tube so that part is normal but the problem is still in the vertical circuit.Maybe the IC just went bad all the way and it might have taken a fusible resistor. If you are familiar with tv service you have a place to check but if you are not too familiar be safe and call for assistance from a servicer,is a straight forward problem and it should not be expensive.Let US know how it goes or if you need more information.
