Hardware failure - the hard disk inside the case has died. Either replace the hard disk or buy a completely new unit.

Seagate Expansion 1TB external Desktop Hard Drive (9sf2A4-500) not detected.

Claire,

Have you tried connecting the drive to another computer using Windows 7 or later. You could try chkdisk /f at a command prompt or get the testdisk app to identify deeper issues with the drive.

yah you must buy a Y-USB cable for your external hardisk. this is connection both ends are one is for hardisk and the other two cable is for USB slot of computer. why it two wires connection to usb because one wire is for Data and the other is for Power. If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. Freeagent 500 GB external not detecting - whirring sound

technically, handling damage is not covered by warranty. the warrenty will get you a new drive.

i am afraid costly data recovery service is the only way to go. the noise is probably coming from head/media damage. the light simply indicates the drive is busy (trying to execute the command host has posted).

Hard disk not detected

The problem is that u have done partitions for 160 GB harddisk, so do all the partitions of 40 GB or less than that.
