This is a common problem an a failry easy DIY fix.

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.

  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

Sound like it will need a new power or video board.

Here is the solution to your problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbGiXqBAv...

I had exactly this problem my self on my LG 47LF66, LVD TV, with longer and longer start-up times and finally "death". The problem is due to bad capacitors on the power supply board. Its a common problem on theses TVs if you google.

I have soldered components to boards before but never dismounted parts from a board before, and I did not want to risk damaging the board. Therefor I made the simple solution of just dismounting the power-supply board with the bad capacitors. I took the board to the nearest TV-repair shop and asked for the cost of having the obviously 4 bad capacitors on the board replaced. 4 hours later and a price of about 70USD in Stockholm Sweden I had a repaired board. Mounted back the board in 5-10 minutes and the TV has been working perfectly since then (now at least 3 months).

    Good luck

You can test preheting the capacitors with a hairdryer on the back of the TV. If you can possibly get the TV started again this way, then it is most surely the capacitors that are not working. The fluids in the capacitor become more effective when heated up (=similar to a regular battery). If the TV then starts up again you can be most sure that the problem is due to slowly failing capacitors.
New capacitors only costs a few dollars. Google for reputable brands. (Replace the old capacitors for capacitors with higher voltage but with the same micro-farad for improved lifespan of the capacitors).

My tv is on but the standby button keeps flashing and I cannot do anything with the remote either I've unplugged it and left if for 30 mins

What make and model of TV is this? If its a LCD tv thats more then a few years old chances are its the very common problem of failing capacitors in the power supply. That will usually cause the issue your describing. I have rebuilt dozens of tv power supplies now, the term commonly referred to now is re-capping the power supply. The capacitors become leaky and the voltages go out of tolerance and the tv will no longer turn on. If you can find someone to take it apart and check the power supply board inside that would be your best bet, otherwise its time for a new tv otherwise. There is no simple fix other then repair unfortunately.

Logik TV stuck in standby

if you don't hear a click its the power over switch. on the power board it is a black box. if you have the back off turn the tv on and then out of stand by and flick the black box it will probably turn on.

MY LG TV MODEL NO 42LG80FR LATE START

I had a 42" LG that began taking longer and longer to power up and finally would not come on at all. I opened it up and found several bulging capacitors on the power supply board. I found a company online that sold a replacement kit of the 10 power supply board capacitors for $18. Installed the new caps and the set has been working fine for two years. You do need to be careful since there are dangerous voltage levels inside of the case and you do need to know how to solder. If you have any doubts, find someone who knows what they are doing.

I have a tevion lcd4203 42inch that wont turn on the standby button just flashes

So what is your TV: LG 42LC2D or LCD4203?

I'd check the exact model on the back if I were you.

In LCD TVs this could be caused by either bad power board or bad main board.

In plasma TVs this can be caused by other boards as well.

If it's an LCD the first step is to verify the power board.

if it's a plasma it's usually to start eliminating other boards by disconnecting them from power to see whether and when will the auto-shutting (the blinking LED) disappear.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to send the power board to someone who knows how to test it independantly.

If you want to do that feel free to contact us or just find a local provider.

DELL 42 inch Plasma TV

I have a 42" LG LCD TV and just experienced this today. Watching cable, then the screen went to black, but audio continued. I pressed the guide button on my remote and pic came on with my guide menu. But then went to black again 10sec later and has remained that way for nearly an hour. Tried switching off both cable box and TV, disconnecting and reconnecting cables, but no luck. Finally unplugged mains, waited a minute, then turned back on. Everything seems normal now after the reboot. Phew.

LG 42in LCD Television - turning unit off

The amount of standyby power consumtion is minimal. The only way to turn it off completly is to disconnect the power from the TV. This will however increase your start up time when you want to use the TV.
