There are several lights on your modem/router. Each one has a function and signals whether it is working correctly by the color it is displaying and a few other factors.

All of the lights on your modem/router should be green and solid - EXCEPT for 2 which are for your internet and wireless services. Blinking means activity. If you INET light is continuously blinking that means its healthy. Blinking means activity. The internet always has activity. The blinking does not signal your activity - it signals the traffic and connection on the internet. Your wireless connection also has a light which should show activity and availability. A blinking light on your wireless connection means that either someone is connected wireless and using the internet or that the connection is up and available for wireless access.

All of your lights should be green. If you see a red or yellow light - regardless of whether it is flashing or not - it means that there is trouble or problems that need to be corrected.

Each light is marked with its function. They should say things like "power", "link", Internet or INET, and "wireless". When you turn on the modem/router during your first set up, let it power up and finish its testing before connecting your pc and turning it on. The modem will test each light, make them all go from red/yellow to green - then make them all turn solid green (not in that exact order) and this is all normal. You will know when it is done when all lights are solid green and stop blinking and/or moving (except the INET & wireless lights which will be constantly blinking). When all lights other then those two are green and steady - then its time to connect the cable to your pc and power it up.

If you are having problems with your internet connection - you can rule out the cause being your modem/router by following the instructions above. When you rule out that the modem/router is not the cause, you can continue by checking your PC.

For a wired connection (wired meaning that you are connecting your computer to the internet by using a cord/cable) the first thing you want to do is make sure that the computer is automatically sensing the connection.

Your computer should automatically sense that there is a live internet connection when you connect the ethernet cord from the modem/router to the pc. When its working right, the computer will display a connection picture which is called an "icon" on the bottom right side of your screen near the clock area. Sometimes there is a downward arrow by the clock which needs to be clicked on to expland this area and show all icons for running programs. If you see a downward pointing arrow by your clock on the bottom right side of your screen, click on the arrow.

Test that it is sensing the internet connection by unplugging the ethernet cable from your pc and watch the bottom right side of the screen at the same time. Unplug it and repeat if necessary while watching the bottom corner to see a change which indicates it senses the connection. A normal internet connection icon looks like the picture of a computer monitor. Some glow green when they are active and the ethernet cable is connected. Some show a red "X" over the picture of the monitor on the bottom right side of your screen when the internet connection is down or not working. Some will say "cable disconnected" when you unplug the ethernet cord. Some show "Cable now connected" when you plug it back in. You should see something change and/or appear if your pc is picking up the internet connection correctly. When you have verified this as true - then you can continue on to the next step of troubleshooting the internet connection.

DSL service is an internet connection that is always on. Its considered a "live" connection. DSL connections usually do not require any set up (programming or changing settings). The only time that this is not the case is when someone tries to to set up a dial up connection like aol over the top of a dsl connection. You can check this by going to your control panel, click on internet options, and choose the "connection" tab at the top. In the connection area box there should be "nothing". The connection area box is for dial up connection settings. If a dial up service was set up in the pc it would show it here (you would see AOL dial up ect). If you see a dial up connection set up and you know that you have dsl, click on the remove box and delete it from this area.

You do not need to install anything from a disk to establish an internet connection if you have a dsl line. That means you dont need an "aol" disk or software to make the internet work.

to start the internet click on the blue "e" on your desktop which stands for internet explorer.

If you have any questions you can reply to my solution by going into the problem you posted on Fixya and click on the "reply" option.

Someone may have hacked into your router and is using up your bandwidth.

go into the router and change (or enable) the security settings. If you don't require wireless, DISABLE it.
unplug and reconnect the modem/router
reset the computer.

PS - don't think that just because your wireless security is configured that someone can't hop onto it.
I have an old P-III laptop that can crack a 128 bit WEP key in 8 minutes!
Disable the wireless if you don't need it or change to WPA/WPA2 personal.

It may even be that someone hadn't hacked in to your system YET but was attempting to...one of the tricks to hacking a WEP key is to inject signals at a high rate of speed which would bring your router to a crawl.
