I just replaced my manual thermostat with a programmable one. The problem is the old one was positioned under a ceiling vent. Now the programmable one cause the heat to cut on and off before the room really warms up. What should i do to keep from wasting energy

A thermostat that old should probably be replaced. The newer models are programmable, and solid state instead of switches and contacts that eventually wear out.

You should be able to hear the compressor kick in. If you don't the most likely culprit is the capacitors. I generally keep spare capacitors on hand at all times, because they are mostly likely to fail on a holiday or a weekend when it is 102 in the shade. If replacing the capacitors doesn't work, you want to look at the thermostat. You will have to look up manuals and testing for your thermostat. And if those things doen't solve your problem, sadly and lastly, you will want to do troubleshooting on the control module in the ceiling. The control module generally resides in the ceiling and you access it through the vent in the ceiling.

sounds like keypad is programmed in lock position read manual for set up to activate keypad again.

Are you completely sure you have the Reversing Valve wire in the right place? Some reversing valves are powered for heat, some for cool. Make sure you know which yours is, or perhaps change that setting (see the manual) on the thermostat to try it.

ALSO, sounds like the FAN wire may not be in the right place either. Did you carefully note the wire colors on the old stat before you started, or perhaps take a photo?

Alternate Wiring

If a labeled wire does not match any terminal

designation, see diagram below.

Do not use C, C1 or X wire. Do not use B wire if you already

have O wire. Wrap bare end of wire with electrical tape.

This thermostat cannot be used if your old thermostat had

any two of the following wires: R, RC, RH, 4 and V.

Place a jumper (piece of wire) between Y and W if you have

a heat pump without auxiliary/back-up heat.

Set jumper JP1, on the back of the thermostat, if you

have connected a wire to the G terminal.

Incorrect jumper setting: An incorrect setting is

noticeable in a gas or oil heating system. When heating

starts, you will initially feel cold air coming out of the vents

as the fan is running before the furnace has enough time

to heat up the air.

Set jumper JP2, on the back of the thermostat, if you

have a heat pump.

Incorrect jumper setting: The heat pump operation

will be reversed, i.e., it will cool in Heat mode and will

heat in Cool mode.

O Leave the jumper in this factory-set

position if you have connected O wire to

the O/B terminal.

1) Install 2 AAA

batteries on the

back of the

thermostat.

2) Align the two

brackets on the

top of the

thermostat with

the corresponding

slots on the top of

the wallplate.

3) Push the

thermostat

against the

wallplate.

4) Tighten the screw

at the bottom of

the thermostat.

5) Turn power back

on at the heating/

cooling system.

Two things may need to be done here, one is to insulate the vents in the high humidity/temperature area to isolate them from these high conditions. The second would to install a drain pan under the system to catch any condensation and drain it away.

Is this a Heating only Unit/Furnace? It sounds like it is. Usually Red or Black would go to the R terminal
and the White wire would go to W terminal. You will
not have control of the blower motor it will only cycle
on in the heat mode.

I would probably run a new four wire to the thermostat so you could turn the fan on in the on
position

sounds like you have a heat pump the w2 on old thermostat is for a second stage heat. If you can give me a little more information on type of system you have (forced air furnace with heat/cool, Heat pump or boiler)? How many wires are on old thermostat? Is it a no programmable or programmable? How old is the furnace?

It sounds like your reversing valve energizes the opposite from how you wired it at the thermostat. Check the instructions.
