My Seagate Replica 500GB drives will suddenly start blinking constantly. There is no activity on it. If I unplug it and plug it in again, Windows Vista 64bit says it's installing the drivers and then the Seagate software wants me to format it. If I reboot, all my data is intact, but it starts blinking again. (I've disabled the automatic backup.)

SOURCE: Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive 500GB not recognising directory tree

Its the rubbish software that Seagate have bundled with their drive which will not allow you to backup the system folders. Solution is to use another backup utility, a google search will quickly locate numerous FREE software products which will alow you to copy anything. Unfortunately when you start googling about this drive you may be quite distressed about your purchase, as i have been :( Problems lay ahead with this drive due to inadequate cooling.....

SOURCE: I have just purchased a Seagate 500GB Desktop hard drive

There is software preloaded on the disk. If you have AutoPlay turned off in your system, it won't start automatically when you connect the drive. Just go to MyComputer and open the drive and you will find a setup file there to install the backup software (I think it's called Launch.exe).

SOURCE: Data Recovery from Seagate Desktop Expansion 500GB External Hard

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.

Suddenly, my 500GB Seagate external hard drive couldn't mount on my iMac. It was working fine till yesterday. I connected them to the Mac USD port, and the light in the seagate is blinking... Any

I can only comment generically:

I would try to uninstall the drive on the OS. Then re-start the computer. After the re-start, connect the drive and see if the drive re-installs itself.

If the error persists, then the drive is indicating failure. To absolutely verify if it has failed, take the drive to a store where there are MAC computers and try the drive on one of their computers to see if it works.

A continuous flashing LED on most devices where the LED does not normally continuously flash is an indication of a failure of the device. Some devices will flash an error code when designed to do so, and if possible.

First, extract all data that you have on the hard-drive, while you still can.

Seagate's web-site suggests that you first download and run Seagate's "Drive Fitness Tool", which exercises the disk-drive, and produces a "fitness" report. If it fails, then delete all your "private" files, and either take the drive back to the retail location where you bought it, or get an RMA (Return Materials Authorization) from Seagate, to get permission from Seagate to return the drive to them, for them to analyze the disk, and probably replace it.

External 500gb hard drive not readable

Check the partition size in Disk Management (if running Win7 - download a free Partition Manager if not) and see if the system is seeing the partition correctly. Seagate has recovery software available on their website but you may just have to repartition and reformat.

My seagate 500 gig free agent desk external drive has suddenly stopped working. It was working fine 2 days ago and then yesterday it apparently wasn't connected so I reconnected it and then it seemed to be...

Do a FULL POWER DOWN Reboot. and try a different USB outlet in the PC... same Laptop to see if it is in your PC that is causing the problem.
Note: Most of those Drives do stop unless they are connected to the PC... energy savings.
If that didnt work... you could have a failed drive. Seagate should help you do some diag if it is in warranty... typically 3 years.

Suddenly my WD external 500GB My Book dropped off my control panel and doesn't respond. I am hoping that it has not crashed. It is not more than 2 years old. It has some pretty important work files on it...

Here are a few things to try. If you have access to a secondary PC or laptop, try connecting your drive to it using a different USB cable. Also try unplugging your drive from the power outlet for a few seconds and then connecting it again. If it's still not being recognized, go to the Seagate site (they bought Maxtor) http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Operating_System_Detection_Issue&vgnextoid=1b734a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

This will help with troubleshooting.

If that doesn't help, I would assume the worst and begin working on data recovery to be safe.
Try a free download of Seagate File Recovery.

  • You can preview your disc and file content in a simple hexadecimal viewer which tells you if a successful recovery is possible. You'll know in advance exactly which files can be recovered before you make a purchase.
  • If your files are recoverable, simply purchase the software for Windows or Mac and restore your files. It's that easy.

Seagate freeagent pro 500GB power on/off unsure

I believe it's normal as the Freeagent is responding to data on the input (eSata) cable. If you don't like the light always ON, hook it up first via USB to a Windows PC and set the light to "off" and the drive to spin down "never". If the drive loses power, you will have to do the procedure again. Otherwise, the light stays mostly constantly ON and make a nice companion to Tivo lights. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"
