My daugther has a Compaq Presario v5000, it isn't working. I purchased a new battery thinking that was the problem. I have had it charging for over two hours. The only response I get when I try to power up is a flashing light. My daugther says that its the signal to charge the battery. Nothing shows on the monitor and it doesn't make a sound. She has had this laptop since Dec. 2006 and has been very active on it, including leaving it on overnight. Is there any hope of saving this laptop or has she fried her first laptop.

Have the charger tested, the original battery may have been flat, because of charger failure rather than battery failure. try an automotive connector if one is available

The solution to your problem lies in one of the following three areas:
1.) Your charger is faulty and is therefore not able to pass power to your laptops battery.
2.) The charging connector on the laptop has come loose from the contacts. Therefore a bad connection.
3.) Your battery is faulty.
I think possibility 2 is the most likely, although you will have to test possibility 3 by removing the battery and plugging in your charger and seeing if the laptop powers on.If it does power on then that rules out possibility 1 and 2 leaving a faulty battery.
their is only one solution for compaq v5000 as you have to buy a usb port small mouse. i mean that you have to purchsae a new mouse. George_raji i want to ask a question that wheather you touchpad has been coloured off by using it. if yes than tell me yes?
The screens on these computers can and will go dead after a while, afterall its an old computer..try an external desktop monitor by plugging it in the back(blue port)
what you need 2 do is either take the whole laptop back 2 where you brought it or even the battery cause you have a faulty battery.
most laptop batterys last for at least 5-10 years and after that no matter how much you charge them up they alwayz seem to be flat.
so my suggestion is get a new battery or take it back to the place that you brought it from and than get it replaced for free as long as you have your recept.
eather you have one or a couple of the following problems,
1. you have a bad battery
2. the power supply is defective
3. the charging circuit in the laptop is defective and the motherboard will require replacement or repaired.
