TOP HALF OF SCREEN WORKS,BOTTOM HALF GRAY HAS GATEWAY LOGO

Try booting to safe mode by tapping the F8 key before the windows logo. if it boots let me know

You have either the circuit board that drives that half of the screen(one for top and another for the bottom) or you have a bad display panel.

Your monitor problem is causes by the power supply. What is happening is the power supply voltages are not stable, just enough to power the unit up. When you connect it to a video signal the power demands slightly increase and the power supply can't handle it. This is a very common problem with LCD after a few years of use. The issue with the power supply is the capacitors have started to fail. These parts are used to filter the output voltage and when they start to fail the outputs start rippling hence the problem you are having. it may be better to bring your LCD to where you bought to claim the warranty. don't try to open the LCD and try to fix it because you will lose the warranty.

If you get power to the controls and you don’t have the startup sound or see the gateway logo when you plug it in, the main board may be bad.
If your picture was pinkish or dark at the top or bottom when it was working then you may have 1 or more of the bulbs failing.
If you have the startup sound and see the gateway logo and the screen just flashes and the power buttons stay lit, then it sounds like probably the inverter may have went.

Take the screws out of the bottom rear edge (these hold the front trim), and the 4 big black ones at the middle of the back that hold the stand bracket.
The trim then unsnaps. {Be aware of the small ribbon to the power button board on the right edge}Start at the bottom and release the trim (pulling up the trim on the screen side usually starts it off), then work your way up each side bottom to top ((a pocket knife or thin putty knife even a credit card, will help release the catches as you work your way up)
Then unsnap the top edge (rocking it while lifting helps)
Disconnect the ribbon at the power button board, (Tiny latch lifts up on a hinge and ribbon slides out)
Once trim is off, remove the 4 corner screws that hold the screen in. Then the screen will lift out with all the guts. You may have to pry up on a corner with a screw driver to get it started.
The inverter is under the medium size metal case.
The power board and main board are under the large cover.
You’ll then have to remove a bunch of screws including the usb board ones and unplug the bulbs and wire to the screen
then the power board and control board is under the center area under the metal cover
Shout if you need more info.
If you email me a good picture of the board , I may be able to get a better idea if it is the inverter from a visual.

It could be a hard-drive directory problem, a hard-drive physical problem OR a motherboard failure. Did you get any random freezing or video corruption in the period leading up to this? If you did it would be indicative of the motherboard issue. If not then it's likely to be one of the first 2 options.

That indicates a hardware problem. From your description I would check the cpu or suspect it as being the problem. It can be a ram problem as well.
