Toshiba satellite M45-S169 won't boot ubuntu from DVD

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Go Here and download the 1st link on the list under Desktop CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

OR...

Here is a direct link to the ISO file you need to download and then burn to a CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

If you don't have Software for burning iso's to CD's then download and install this totally FREE CD Burning program:

When on internet arrow freezes. will take up to 5mins to resolve. computer getting slower. thinking of full reboot as only have family pics stored on laptop

Get a copy of Puppy Linux and make a live CD. Puppy Linux runs in ram only so you can look around on your windows drive (even if it's acting strange) and save your pictures with it. Copy your photos onto a USB key.

After you have saved your pictures you can reinstall Windows or even keep using Puppy Linux, but Ubuntu Linux would be a better OS for a beginner.

You can get Puppy Linux here...

You can get Ubuntu here

I tried run live ubuntu distro on my laptop compaq nx9030 but it freezes, one of the last message is 'out of memory', pc has 256mb and installed xp home run clean, other recent distro also freezes, only...

Well, Linux used to pride itself for being able to run on almost any machine. Ubuntu has become bloated over the years, but more user friendly. You may want to try an older distro like Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support): http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ You will want the PC (Intel x86) desktop CD version ubuntu-8.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

Or Xubuntu: http://www.xubuntu.org/getubuntu

Or Lubuntu: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=lubuntu

Gateway says max RAM is two 128mb modules but heard two 256mb modules will fit...true?

You need to make sure you have a processor of at least 700mhz. Two 256MB modules no problem. Many times you can buy a used laptop on ebay (either 9300 or Compaq armada e500) with the two 256MB modules included a lot cheaper than just buying 2 new 256MB modules. The Compaq Armada and 9300 modules interchangeable. Either way, you can still buy 2- 256MB modules(PC100/133 SDRAM 144PIN LOW DENSITY) for under $40.00 shipped. Very easy to install. I suppose if you have a P4 processor you could even go larger. I use Linux, which is 3-4 times faster than windows anyways, with no viruses etc. I have two 9300 laptops running like so with no problems whatsoever. Extremely fast(with ubuntu), too! If you haven't tried Ubuntu operating system you haven't lived. I'm no computer geek and find it so simple and fast. Free downloads on internet or buy a Live CD on ebay for a buck to try out without having to install.

Hello Sir,

I am sure your system meets the normal requirement for installing and using the Ubuntu OS. So you dont have to worry about the system speed and perfomance. I have also sent you the link to download the latest version of Ubuntu OS 10.4 from the original website. All you need to do is download it and burn that image file using nero or any image burning software to the dvd and boot the dvd in your system and install it.

How to activation camera in ubuntu os

UBUNTU is a linux open source OS. Chances are your camera doesnt have a Linux driver and wasnt designed to operate under Linux. The website http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communityis the user support community for UBUNTU.. I would post your question there for assistance from someone with a similar model for your laptop. There is also a selection for real time chat support from other UBUNTU users. I have checked DELL website under your unit and it was made to run the Windows XP system so there are no Linux drivers available directly from Dell.

NETGEAR does not offer any offcial drivers for the adapter to work on Ubuntu as they dont support Linux OS. However, you may try third party drivers to install the adapter on Ubuntu. Try the below link:

I have an opportunity to get a free Compaq Presario 1260 with no OS, but I don't know if it's possible to load Windows XP Pro on this type of machine, and I have not tried out my Ubuntu linux disk yet....

My old Toshiba Satellite 490 is even older and has much less processor power and I run XP on it just fine. In fact XP runs faster on it then 98 did.

Known Problems Compaq Presario 1200 laptops are often found with damaged power jacks. Some of these power jacks appear to have been blown in half due to some sort of short; others rip their copper traces off of the motherboard due to stress placed on the power jack. Presario 1200 laptops typically have four tiny copper rings embedded in the motherboard behind the power jack that can be used to reattach a slightly damaged power jack and repair the failing unit.
The LCD Power Inverter cable (which runs through the hinge from the base to the screen), is very susceptible to damage, given the strain of bending when closing the lid. The cable is a 6-strain ribbon variety, and therefore soldering is all but impossible.
