If your cable or satellite decoder box has a VGA or DVI-D connector output, then yes. You need those types of cables, one or the other, to connect it to the monitor from the decoder box.

How to hook up the TV

To use the TV as a Monitor: Use an HDMI cable from the Monitor Out on the 6006 to an HDMI Input on the TV. You need to go into the setup menu and set the HDMI sound to go to the amp and not the TV.

If you are tuning TV stations with an antenna and the TV tuner: First connect the TV as above so you can watch your other sources, like Blu-ray players. Then add an Optical Digital Audio cable from the output on the TV to an optical input on the TV. When watching antenna TV, select the input on the 6006 that the optical cable is connected to. You may have to play with settings in the TV and the 6006 to get this to work! You should be able to listen to 5.1 sound while watching tv over the antenna.

No signal with NEC plasma PX-50XM4A

You were right when you called it a monitor, it is a monitor, which means no tuner. To be able to use it as a TV you will need cable box or satellite receiver or something that has a tuner in it.

Need to hook up laptop to TV

If you have an HDMI port you might also have an RGB port, use your tv video source button and go through your options. If RGB option is listed you have it. It's a standard moniter port, you can use a standard monitor cable to hook things up. This will not however carry sound so you'll need a basic 3.5mm size cable that ends in an RCA plug (can be picked up radio shack.

I use this method to watch hulu.com movies on my 50" plasma tv.

Another option if you have an "S" video on both the laptop and the tv, use that with just an "S" video cable.

Other wise look for a RGB cable that converts to standard RCA stereo plugs again Radio Shack should be able to help you. You can also buy cables on eBay a lot cheaper then a retail store.

Watch laptop movies on TV?

What you would need is a VGA to RCA converter cable. Something like this. Once hooked up, use your Fn key combination to switch the view from the internal monitor on the laptop to the external monitor, now your TV.

MONITOR

You will need a TV Tuner expansion card for your computer. If you buy a TV Tuner expansion card and install it, and connect an antenna or cable TV cable, you will be able to watch TV shows on your computer monitor while using your computer. With some TV tuner cards, you can also record TV for watching it later, or even hook up your VCR and record VHS tapes and home videos to put on DVD. This is a more complicated topic and instructions should come with the TV Tuner expansion card you purchase.

TV tuner cards usually run in the range of $20-75 and will fit in most computers. You can buy them online and at computer or electronics stores. Installation is fairly simple and the instructions and software are included (unless you buy a used one)

Good luck!

The "tv" you bought is actually a monitor, meaning you need a cable converter box to actually watch cable with it.
