I have a Kenmore canister vacuum - model 25614506. Some time ago, I was not able to turn the vacuum off with the on/off switch, but could still use the vacuum. Turned if off/on by pulling the plug. The other day when I went to plug it in, I heard a pop. Now the sweeper runs but the vacuum cleaner does not **** - no air flow. What could be the problem. The cleaner is only 4 years old.

No, the only effect of not cleaning them would be decreased air flow and consequently . The time between changing filters depends on how much the vacuum cleaner is used. Common failures are damaged cords and a damaged or failed power switch
I have the same problem. Couldn't turn it off and now it doesn't work for the floor setting (though I can now turn it off). I suspect the switch in the handle is the problem but having trouble opening the handle...
if it has a foot pedal flick it a few times and see if it goes off.if its a switch unplug the vacuum and move the switch from on to off real fast a few time.if you have any contact cleaner you can try to spray a little into the switch while unplugged and work the switch back and forth a few times .the switch might just be dirty.if you don't hear a click when you turn it ioff and on then the switch is probably bad.please leave feedback.i hope i was some help to you
You did not give the complete model number, but you can go to sears.com, click on parts and put in you model number. You will get links to click on, click on the cannister one and you get a picture breakdown and a parts list, you can also order after choosing the part you need.
Is there two switches for the unit, one for the handle (pick up unit) and brush assembly, and one for the vacuum motor? If so it seems that the handle unit is o.k. but the problem may be the switch to the vacuum motor. I would suggest testing the vacuum motor switch with an ohm meter for continuity through the switch. If its at fault replace it. You can probably purchase one from Sears or maybe Radio Shack.
Good Luck!
p.s. do not work on vacuum if plugged in.
