Lightning strike lightning hit the tree behind my house and now my tv doesnt work. the power light stays on when the tv is plugged in but the tv will not turn on. does this light staying on mean something. Or is my tv a boat anchor

  • bkindle Jun 11, 2008

no it didnt do anything. It doesnt even look like the screen is on. the tv doesnt make any noise like when you turn it on. the light says timer underneth of it but it is right next to the power button. I assume that is the power light it is always on when the tv is on. the power button wont turn the tv off or on the light just stays on as long as it is plugged in.

I hope you all don't mind my interjection , but I am having the same problem. If the pressing in of the buttons ( remote or on tv itself?), don't work, which fuses are you referring? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have an older Mitshubishi vs-60803 (60 inch model. This is a rear projection HDTV ready system that uses an external converter model RGB-cv10 to creeate HDTV. Everything has been working fine until dish satellite told me to push a mode button on the satellite receiver, to reset and size the picture. This worked on another TV that I have. But in the case here, when I try to get the HD picture back, it won't work properly. What I found out is that if I pull out the satellite card, the system recycles. Then, the Mitshubishi converter goes to solid red dot indicating there is a signal. But ten or so seconds after, the tv screen flashes black and you can hear the sound while the screen stays balck with red zigzag lines on the tv screen. Then after another 10 seconds or so, the screen turns blue. In another ten seconds, the words check HDTV RGBHV cables. I have checked cables actually reversed all and can find no cable problems. And during this, the red light on the converter starts flashing red indication no signal. Any Ideas? Is the lack of signal likely due to cable connection or what. Remembrer all worked fine except the picture size until I pushed the mode button on the satellite receiver.

I would check the fuses one or two of them may be blown due to the surge of electricity.

Why does my tcl L19p51 wont stay on after lightning strikes

Where did the lightning hit? Electronic devices can be damaged by lightning very easily. The power surge can come in the house through the wires.

What does it mean when one reads FD in the panel and the lights on the panel aren't stable?

The control board to your range may have been damaged because of the lightning storm. It happens when lightning strikes a power line and sends a surge of power to your home. This large current surge can easily damage electronic circuits. More often than not if a device is on and lightning strikes, that is when the device gets damaged. During large lightning storms it is best to turn off all electronic devices. The electricity going to your house is fine now and that is probably what your electrician checked.

Will a nearby lightning strike cause a power board failure?

It could happen yes it would depend where the strike entered the TV. Not all lighting strikes hit on the electrical lines, on a TV they can come through the cable, as well as a antenna if you have one hooked up.

Lightning strike

This model is famous for capacitors being bad in the low voltage regulators on the signal board. Also has been known for cold solder connections in the power supply to the convergence IC. I don't have my notes at home but I belive that model only uses one IC for convergence, STK393-570. You cant see it from the back because of it being hidden by its heat sink.

Lightning strike

Hello bkindle.....not a boat anchor YET!!!! Had similar problem with WS-55513 and it turned out to be a faulty DM board. There are 4 capacitors on the board that may have blown. If yo can solder, it is a pretty easy repair. I purchased a PDF manual for mine online to get familiar with the model.

Otherwise, you can expect to pay between 275.00 for a repaired board OR between 350.00 and 450.00 for a replacement board from Sears or Mitsubishi.

Hope this helps. I know it is frustrating but be patient.

Good Luck - Richard (MetalDad)

Lightning strike

Lightning hits do some nasty damage to electronics.
Alot of times that type of repair is part of an insurance claim. The insurance company requires estimates and will repair them up to the cost of replacement.

If you arent dealing with an insurance claim on this I'd still recommend a professional estimate.
Lightning damage sometimes is confined to the power supply and once repaired could be fine bit in my experience most items that take a nasty hit are a write off.
