Which OS Service Pak is XP using? Have you tried to update the drivers? ' System ' Hardware ' Device Mgr
Can you test the burner on a 2nd PC? My older PC's dont see the DVD-RW but the burning software does.
First look and see the write speed of the drive. 1x to 4x is slow but recommended by all programs and this is initially the default settings for most programs. You must goto the settings of your dvd burning program and set the burn rate to 16x or higher.
All optical drives use ATAPI drivers, these drivers are native to Windows. Physically install the DVD player and it will be recognised, depending on what type of CD and DVD burning software you have your drive may not be recognised by them.
OEM burning software will only work with the optical drive it was supplied with, retail burning software should work with any drive.
To check, go into the control panel, systems, hardware, device manager and uninstall the dvdrw, then reboot the machine and let windows install the device driver.
If the drive is "Master" (the first drive in cable line installed) then the jumper goes to "MA", if it is a "SLAVE" connected drive then the jumper goes to "SL".
Have the same problem, it used to work and suddenly it wont do it
anymore. I guess this is due to windows XP updates. Windows says that
the driver is up to date and I also installed the latest firmware. I am
using Nero 7 to burn. I had troubles before but somehow fixed it. Now
when I insert a DVD (data) and try to open the dvd drive the whole
computer hangs. The content shows for a moment before the computer
freezes so it IS in the DVD.
