Seagate FreeAgent Pro Desktop 250GB - no power

Hi,

I have had a seagate external HD (desktop 250GB) for 6 months and it was working fine up unitil a few days ago, it will now not power up. I have tried on several different computers and power sources but without success. Unfortunately I have data on the drive which is not backed up elsewhere and want to access this data. I am waiting to be able to contact seagate over a warranty repair, apparently they are only contactable from NZ in Beijing time??? But if I send it to seagate, I believe it is likely the data will be lost so I think it maybe better to forgo the warranty and attempt data recovery locally. Any ideas on who would be best to attempt this?
I am based in Wellington NZ.
Thanks I am having the same problem of the drive not showing up in My Computer even though it shows having power and connected via USB? Help!!!

powers up fine and is occasionally recognized by the computer. my pictures and music magically disappeared, but the hard drive still shows under properties that music and pictures are there.

Hi I had a Seagate Freeagent Pro 750GB. 8months old. Was working fine then one morning I pluged it in and it was completely dead. No light no HDD sound just a faint clicking sound every few seconds. The External power supply volage was being dragged down by the Freeagent drive.(no problem with the external power pack).

Have removed the HDD from the enclosure to see if the actual drive is ok (fingers crossed). The SATA interface board in the base of the Freeagent is definately faulty.

Really un-impressed with this product, difficult to open up and get drive out. didnt last very long.

Hey, I had what might be a similar problem, drive would have power but wouldn't spin up properly or show up in my computer. Don't think there is a long term fix but I posted on my site how I got all 250Gb of the data of it, hope this helps, it's http://www.moneywhatmoney.co.uk/index.php/Bens-Articles/Seagate-from-the-Ashes.html

SOURCE: Seagate FreeAgent Pro Desktop 250GB - no power

Hi tmvnz,

It is likely that the External HDD has been allocated a drive leter that was in use already. This is a common problem with External Hard drives.

1) Right click My computer and choose 'manage' from the menu.
2) Click 'Disk Managment' under the heading 'storage'
3) look down the bottom right for the external drive in question and right click.
4) Click Change Drive letter from the menu.
5) change the drize letter to an unused letter.

It should then appear under My Computer.

Let me know how you get on.

All the best,

Seagate 250GB FreeAgent USB 2.0 Ext Hard Drive with laptop

Whether your computer is a laptop or desktop does not inherently decide if the drive will work or not. If it can't see the connection, there must be another problem with the drive. I would suggest reporting what you have done to try and make it work and anything you notice out of the ordinary (how lights on the drive are acting, noises the drive is making, alerts you see when you plug it into your laptop, etc). That will allow us to better help you find a solution to the problem.

Make freeagent deskot 250GB master hard drive

1) I greatly suggest against making ANY external HD your primary disk.

2) Not many computers support this.

3) The most likely method would involve reisntalling your OS (Windows/OS X) onto the drive.

4) I just noticed this thread is from three months ago... :P
