Try another computer just for the kicks of it and see if does the same. Your computer has this little program deep down call iTunes helper that's suppose to link the USB iPod to iTunes. If it's not working right nothing will happen when connected. If the iPod works on another machine, iTunes helper is the problem or also even bad USB port could be the problem. Send me an update and I'll keep helping you troubleshoot. - Scotty

Next part you may have already tried, but have you reinstalled iTunes? It will include and install iTunes helper in the reinstall. You won't loose you music since that's stored in your music folder of your hard drive. Also try plugging maybe a USB mouse into the same place you plugged in the iPod to see if the USB port is dead. - Keep me posted. - Scotty
