Hi, so you have a central air split system, with the gas furnace in the attic and the condenser outdoors. Unless you had a service tech out and told you your system was shot, you more then likely just have a problem with the outdoor unit. Yes, it may be a freon problem and it needs a charge, or some minor problem in one of the electrical circuits not bringing on the compressor so there would be no cooling. $6,000 sounds about right for a complete system, but I don't believe at all that's what you need. If you are familar with electrical, or you are able to go to the outdoor unit to see if you can hear the compressor running, and the outdoor fan is on, this is the place to start. Look it over, turn the unit on and make sure the blower is coming on in the attic. If so, make sure the outdoor unit is up and running. You can take off a panel and hear the compressor to see if it is on. If so, its very possible it is just low on freon. You will have 2- copper lines coming out of this unit. Place your hand on the large line and see if it is nice and cold and even wet, condensation. The smaller line will be much warmer, even hot if its running ok. If you find that the compressor is on and the line is warm, sounds like it may just be a leak and you should call and get a tech out to check this for you. It may be many things, but check to make sure that what I have told you is ok, and keep me posted. Until we find out what is going on, don't let them tell you you need to install a complete system. I am sure you were just checking. Please give me the model and serial number, and name of the outdoor unit if you would be so kind. And the age and over all condition that you think it may be in, like the last time it was serviced. I will wait to hear back from you, so we can get this up and running.
Sincerely,

I have 1994 Chevy Lumina 4dr 3.1 Multi Point, Front W/D, F1, 6cyl. My air conditioner was blowing warm air @ 2mos ago & my husband added freon & a/c began blowing cooler air but, not as cold as...

You have a Freon leak because all the fittings, seals, coils rubber, compressor seals and entire AC system will need to be checked out by someone that can find the problem and resolve them or you will never get this fixed. A/C in cars get hot in the summer and cold in winter and all the seals dry out. The system needs to have all the air and moisture pulled out before any Freon in charged into repaires A/C unit or the system will not cool properly. That is the only way to resolve this Tammy, Thanks Sea Breeze

No Freon doesnt evaporate the only way you have to charge an A/C unit is if it has a leak somewhere in the system. It sounds like your compressor is locked up I would try installing a super boost to the Condenser (outside unit). Let me know

Freezer has had ice film on bottom for some time, leaks down into the frig, unit began making a periodic clicking noise last night, woke up this morning to defrosted food in freezer. Cleaned coils,...

Just by cleaning the coils and the keeping it shutdown should not have any effect on the freon in the compressor. It is only used to cool down the coils so that the air blows over them is also made cold. Please keep it running for a while and check if the problem persists. There is a chance that the air is first cooling down the ducts in the refrigerator and then afterwards the whole inner body. That can warm down the air a bit. If the problem persists, this can be a freon issue.

The front air conditioner on my 2003 dodge grand caravan has a small leak that the dealship says is under the dash. Can I just put a charge on the front unit the back unit blows cold air. Is this...

There is only one system, so your conclusion doesn't make sense. If the front evaporator is leaking, the whole system will lose charge, and the back will not be cooling. Your problem may actually be the front blend door. Recommend you get a second opinon. Evaporator replacement is much more than $300.

I have a Dometic Duo Therm rv Roof Air Conditioner Model# 59516.531.The fan is blowing and the compressor is kicking on but it is not blowing out cold air. Someone said it must be out of freon. Why would...

These are a closed system.(meaning that there is no fill valves for recharging) But a heating & cooling technician can solder them on and re-charge the system. Only problem there is to get an estimate up front, and compare it to buying a new roof unit which also comes with a new warranty, as well as keep in mind that the freon went somewhere, so there is an obvious leak that will need to be addressed as well. Most times it's wiser and cheaper in long run just to buy a new roof unit.
Are you sure that the compressor is kicking in? Did anyone remove cover on roof and check lines from compressor to see if any cooling is occurring?
These don't often leak, that's why I'm asking. Any idea how old the unit is?
Perhaps in fairly new, it's a warranty issue.

Unit turns on,compressor runs, evap and cond clean, fan runs, will not blow cool

two things that may be the problem. 1. there may be a clog in the metering device in the unit preventing the freon from ciculating through the unit. The repair for this is to evacuate the freon from the unit and have the meter ing valve replaced (an a/c tech can do this for a minimal charge). 2. the unit is low enough on freon to prevent cooling but not cause the compressor to go into thermal overload.
I would have the freon level checked before I went any further

Good luck hope this helped

Duo therm ac problem

Same problem. I have a 2005 on a Rockwood Roo. Worked fine in October 2009. Not working June 2010. Problem is not a freon leak, compressor went bad. I banged the compressor gently with rubber mallet then with a hammer but that did not work. The fan runs, the compressor runs but gets hot. Also no indication of freon moving through system as everything gets warm from the compressor outward.
